Volvo reveals outdoorsy EX30 Cross Country

  • Volvo set to launch EX30 Cross Country
  • Takes the regular EX30 and adds more ‘rugged ingredients’
  • Gets range of up to 265 miles between charges
  • UK spec to be confirmed

Volvo is readying to launch a rugged, outdoorsy, all-wheel drive version of its award-winning EX30 - and it’s seen here for the first time.

The fully-electric EX30, Volvo’s smallest car, first hit UK roads in 2024 and quickly went on to win the ‘Best EV Crossover’ gong at the TopGear.com Electric Awards 2024.

Now a new EX30 Cross Country EV model will be introduced by Volvo, featuring bigger wheels, a raised ride height for improved off-road skills, chunky front and rear skidplates, and scuff-busting wheelarch extensions.

Volvo also says that, ‘naturally’, the EX30 Cross Country is a 4x4 ‘capable of handling the tough and slippery conditions that are part and parcel of life outside the city’.

The Scandinavian manufacturer also reckons driving an EX30 ‘should be an experience, not just a car’ so customrs also get exclusive access to accessories - including 18-inch all-terrain tyres - and gear, thanks to a collaboration with Swedish outdoor equipment brand Fjällräven.

The design of the EX30 is inspired by the ‘deep lakes, endless forests, great mountain ranges’ of Volvo’s homeland, with the front featuring a unique piece of artwork showing the topography of the Kebnekaise peaks in Arctic Sweden.

You can expect an electric range of up to 265 miles between charges while the 69 kWh battery can be recharged from 10-80 per cent in as little as 26 minutes.

The doors contain larger storage compartments than the regular EX30 after Volvo removed the speakers and incorporated them into the soundbar on the dashboard instead.

There are lots of other cubby holes in the cabin while rear passengers also get a neat, removable storage box that slides out from beneath the central tunnel.

Google services are built into the infotainment system - like every new Volvo - and you can expect a full suite of driver safety and assistance systems, with full UK specs still to be revealed.

Jim Rowan, Volvo Cars’ CEO, said: “In Sweden we face harsh winters, but we also like to make the most of them by getting out and exploring our amazing nature, even when it’s minus 20 Celsius outside. That’s why we want to deliver a fully rounded experience, not simply a car, to our EX30 Cross Country customers.”

Rivals to the Volvo EX30 Cross Country will be in short supply as it’s a relatively niche car, but alternatives to leasing the regular EX30 are the Kia EV3Smart #1, and the new Vauxhall Frontera Electric.
