Could Chery Stockman pick-up rival the Ford Ranger and BYD Shark?

  • Would compete with other PHEV pick-ups like the Ford Ranger

Chery Stockman PHEV pickup

Chery has revealed the name of its new plug-in hybrid pick-up, with the Stockman set to launch in Australia towards the end of 2026.

The Stockman hasn't been confirmed for the UK just yet - but here's hoping it makes it to Blighty.

It could become one to watch, though, as Chery expands its presence in Europe and prepares to enter the commercial vehicle market with its new Delivan van brand.

Launching first in Australia, a notably right-hand-drive market, the Stockman will use a diesel plug-in hybrid powertrain, which would give it a different angle from the Ford Ranger PHEV and the upcoming BYD Shark 6 rival.

A different take on hybrid power

Most plug-in hybrids use petrol engines paired with electric motors.

Chery is taking a different route by combining electric power with a 2.5-litre twin-turbo diesel engine. That could make a big difference in a market where users still value diesel for towing, load carrying and longer-distance driving.

Final specifications haven’t been confirmed, but expect the Stockman to produce around 350hp and 680Nm of torque. A useful electric-only range is also expected, although figures quoted in China of around 100 miles are likely to be optimistic, and reduced once tested under European standards.

The company is targeting the familiar pick-up benchmarks of a one-tonne payload and 3.5-tonne towing capacity, building its tough truck over a traditional ladder-frame chassis, with low-range gearing and locking differentials. This will be a proper working pickup with genuine off-road credibility.

That will make it a closer match for established pick-ups than some electrified models, especially if Chery can combine useful electric range with traditional diesel strengths.

No UK launch, yet...

For now, the Stockman is confirmed for Australia rather than Britain. Chery hasn’t said whether the pick-up will be offered in the UK, and there are no confirmed timings, prices or specifications for this market, although it’s being seriously considered.

Despite that, the timing is interesting. BYD is preparing to bring the Shark 6 plug-in hybrid pickup to the UK later this year, Ford already sells the Ranger PHEV, and manufacturers are under pressure to reduce emissions without giving up the payload and towing figures pickup buyers expect.

That could create an opportunity for Chery if it decides to bring the Stockman here.

A diesel plug-in hybrid pickup would be an unusual proposition in the UK, but potentially an appealing one. For fleets and businesses that are not ready to move to a fully electric pick-up, but want lower emissions and some electric driving ability, the Stockman could offer a distinctive alternative.

As Chery’s commercial vehicle ambitions grow, the Stockman is one worth keeping an eye on.
