Volvo's latest EX30 is an electric van

Volvo has entered the UK van market for the first time with the launch of the EX30 Cargo, a fully electric car-derived van based on its EX30 compact SUV.

The EX30 Cargo is priced from £28,995 plus VAT and fees, with first deliveries due later this year.

Rather than being a purpose-built van, the EX30 Cargo is a UK conversion of the standard EX30. The rear seats have been removed and replaced with a flat load floor, while a full-height bulkhead separates the cab from the load area.

That creates 1,000 litres of load space and a 390kg payload, putting it firmly in the car-derived van category rather than making it a direct rival to conventional small vans.

Volvo says the model has been created for businesses and fleets that want the brand’s safety, technology and electric drivetrains in a compact commercial vehicle. To improve practicality, the EX30 Cargo also gets wider-opening rear doors, a cargo work light and additional mounting points beneath the load floor.

Buyers can choose between the standard EX30 Cargo and the more rugged-looking EX30 Cross Country Cargo, which adds increased ground clearance and tougher exterior styling.

Range of up to 295 miles

The EX30 Cargo uses the same electric drivetrain options as the passenger car. That means a choice of single-motor and twin-motor versions, with a maximum WLTP range of up to 295 miles, depending on specification.

Standard-range versions use a 49kWh battery, while extended-range and twin-motor models use a larger 65kWh pack. Rapid charging is also supported, at rates of up to 153kW, helping to make the EX30 Cargo a viable option for urban fleets and businesses covering regular daily mileage.

With up to 428hp under the bonnet, performance is rather more than brisk, with 0-62 coming up as quickly as 3.6 seconds. If you're carrying anything delicate, make sure it's packaged well.

Car-like luxury

As you’d expect from Volvo, the EX30 Cargo comes with a generous equipment list. Even entry-level models include adaptive cruise control, Google-based infotainment, parking sensors and a rear-view camera, along with a broad suite of driver assistance systems.

Higher-spec versions add features such as heated seats, a heated steering wheel and upgraded audio, giving the EX30 Cargo a more premium feel than most vans of this size.

Options are limited given the van's high spec. You can pick from five colours, though, including white. It is a van, after all.

The return of the car derived van

The EX30 Cargo joins a growing number of electric car-derived vans aimed at urban fleets and businesses. Like similar models from BYD, Citroen and Ford, it trades outright carrying ability for lower running costs, zero-emission driving and favourable tax treatment.

With its modest payload, it is unlikely to suit traditional trades. Instead, it looks best suited to businesses where image, comfort and emissions matter more than maximum load capacity.
