Ford unveils tax-friendly Ranger 2-Seat

  • New 2-Seat variant of the Ford Ranger revealed
  • Based on double-cab model
  • Rear seats removed to create load space
  • Qualifies for commercial tax treatment
  • Offered in Wildtrak trim
  • Diesel or plug-in hybrid power

Ford is now offering a double-cab version of the Ranger with just two seats - and it makes the UK's best-selling pick-up even more desirable.

The 2-Seat model swaps the rear passenger area for an enclosed load space designed to carry equipment more securely and help the vehicle qualify for commercial tax treatment.

That makes it a timely addition to the Ranger line-up.

Is the Ford Ranger Double Cab 2-Seat tax friendly?

Since changes to the way double-cab pick-ups are treated for tax purposes, manufacturers have been looking at ways to preserve the appeal of these vehicles for buyers who use them primarily as working tools rather than family transport.

In the Ranger 2-Seat, the rear bench, seatbelts and side windows are removed and replaced with aluminium panels, a fixed bulkhead, a dedicated liner and a heavy-duty floor with anchor points. The result is a practical space for storing tools, equipment and other items that owners may not want to leave exposed in the open load bed.

The conversion has been developed in line with HMRC guidance for goods-carrying vehicles. For eligible users, that should mean access to 100% plant and machinery allowances and the flat-rate van benefit-in-kind regime, while retaining commercial vehicle road tax.

Ford believes the new version will appeal to customers who still need the Ranger’s towing and off-road ability, but have little use for rear seats on a day-to-day basis, promising that the enclosed rear load area provides a warmer, drier and more secure space for higher-value kit such as tools or electrical equipment.

What engine does the Ford Ranger Double Cab 2-Seat have?

At launch, the Ranger 2-Seat will be offered in Wildtrak trim and with a choice of diesel or plug-in hybrid power.

An initial batch of 200 vehicles is planned, with the option to broaden the line-up later if demand is strong enough.

The conversion is carried out by EDC, the company behind the MS-RT versions of the Ranger and Transit Custom, ensuring the new model feels like a properly engineered product rather than a simple aftermarket seat removal job.

The Ranger 2-Seat gives Ford a direct entry into a small but growing niche of pick-ups adapted for commercial-only use, which includes the Isuzu D-Max Commercial and forthcoming Mitsubishi L200 Commercial.

The new model will make its public debut at the Commercial Vehicle Show at the NEC Birmingham from 21 to 23 April.
