Ford Explorer Van makes debut

  • New Ford Explorer Van revealed
  • Car-derived commercial vehicle based on Explorer SUV
  • Fully electric with 373-mile range
  • Designed for fleets who need long distance capabilities
  • Pricing still TBC

Ford has revealed the new Explorer Van, a commercial conversion of its electric Explorer SUV

It's designed for fleets that need more range than most compact electric vans can currently offer.

Developed by Ford Pro’s specialist conversion team at Dagenham, the Explorer Van was created in response to demand from a major fleet customer.

Initially, it will be offered on a fleet-only basis, with a minimum order of five vehicles, although Ford says it hopes that threshold can be lowered or removed if demand grows.

Due to make its public debut at the 2026 Commercial Vehicle Show, the Explorer takes a slightly different approach to the electric van market. Rather than being a conventional small van, it is a car-derived commercial vehicle aimed at operators who place a higher value on range and tax treatment than outright carrying capacity.

Ford says the Explorer Van was developed for fleets whose needs were not being fully met by the E-Transit Courier. While the Courier offers much more cargo space, its official range is significantly lower, making it less suitable for operators covering longer daily distances.

That gives the Explorer Van a clear point of difference. Depending on the version, it offers a WLTP range of up to 373 miles, comfortably beyond what most compact electric vans can currently achieve.

Two versions will be available. The rear-wheel-drive model uses a 77kWh battery and delivers the full 373-mile range, while an all-wheel-drive version uses a 79kWh battery and offers up to 353 miles. The all-wheel-drive option could also appeal to fleets operating in tougher conditions or in areas where extra traction is useful.

Explorer Van: How Ford turns it into a commercial vehicle

The conversion is carried out in-house at Ford’s Dagenham Conversion Centre. Rear seats are removed, a full bulkhead is fitted behind the front seats, and the rear load area is reworked with lashing points and movable cargo dividers. The rear side windows are also obscured to meet N1 commercial vehicle classification requirements.

The finished result offers around 1,460 litres of load space and a payload of approximately 650kg.

That means it cannot match a conventional compact van on space, but payload is closer than you might expect. In practice, this is a vehicle aimed at fleets carrying lighter tools, equipment or goods while prioritising long electric range.

Ford Explorer Van: Tax treatment could be a big draw

Because the Explorer Van qualifies as an N1 commercial vehicle, it should be treated as a van for tax purposes rather than a passenger car. That is likely to be a major part of its appeal for some business users.

Ford has not yet confirmed pricing, and Plug-in Van Grant eligibility is still being assessed. However, with a gross vehicle weight of more than 2.5 tonnes, it may qualify for the full £5,000 grant.

The Explorer Van is unlikely to become a mainstream commercial vehicle, as its limited load space and fleet-only launch underline how targeted it is. Even so, it fills an interesting gap.

For fleets that want the tax and operational benefits of a van, but do not need a traditional load bay, the Explorer Van could offer a genuinely useful alternative.
