It’s official: Dacia Spring will be UK’s cheapest EV

Good news for bargain hunters - the incoming Dacia Spring will be the UK’s cheapest electric vehicle (EV) when it arrives this October.

When we first learned the Spring was coming to Britain (it’s already available in other European markets), Dacia promised that it would be affordable.

The manufacturer wasn’t lying - as the plucky EV has been given a £14,995 price tag, which undercuts rivals like the MG4 EV or the Vauxhall Corsa Electric by a good £12,000.

That low fee should also be reflected in your monthly leasing prices, as and when they arrive.

Here in the UK, the Spring will be available in two trim levels - ‘Expression’ and ‘Extreme’.

Standard-issue kit includes a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, cruise control, manual air conditioning, rear parking sensors, a Media Control system with USB port, electric front windows and remote central locking.

The more fancy Extreme grade adds extras like a 10-inch touchscreen, electric mirrors, sat nav, and wireless connectivity with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. You also get a bi-directional charger allowing you to use the Spring as a power source for external appliances.

A 26.8 kWh battery isn’t the biggest on the market by any stretch, but it gives a range of up to 137 miles between charges (Dacia reckons 186 miles if you’re just pootling around town), which should be more than ample for urban commuters.

Let’s also not forget that the outgoing Mini Cooper Electric - prior to the recent overhaul - made do with a range of around 140 miles, so it should be workable for lease customers on a budget.

Two different power outputs will be up for grabs - 45 hp or 65 hp - and while that sounds measly, Dacia reckons that because the Spring is so light, it should still offer decent enough shove to keep up with traffic.

The battery can be charged from 20% to 100% on a suitable domestic outlet in less than 11 hours, or in just four hours on a 7kW wall box.

You get safety systems like advanced emergency braking, traffic sign recognition with speed alert, rear park assist, lane change alert, lane keep assist, driver attention warning, and emergency call (eCall).

Meanwhile a 308-litre boot is relatively decent, being on a par with a car like the Peugeot E-208.

All in all, then, it’s a car that has a ton going for it - if you can live with the relatively short range.

Luke Broad, Dacia Brand Director for the UK, said: “Spring has played a key part in widespread adoption of EVs across Europe and, with a price that is even lower than speculated, we’re confident it will continue the success story in the UK. We have listened to the concerns of UK drivers regarding accessing EVs, ensuring it not only has an unprecedented price but affordability that doesn’t come at the expense of durability, equipment or usability. Quite simply, there’s no other new EV currently on sale that offers so much for so little.”
