Tough new Ford Ranger Super Duty confirmed for the UK

  • New Ford Ranger Super Duty confirmed for UK
  • Built for the most demanding users
  • Payload of close to two tonnes, towing capacity of up to 4.5 tonnes
  • Reinforcements all round
  • Powered by 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel engine

Ford has confirmed that the tough Ranger Super Duty will come to the UK, bringing a heavy-duty version of its best-selling pick-up to specialist fleets and operators.

The model was shown at the Commercial Vehicle Show in April, although Ford said at the time that there were no confirmed UK launch plans. That position has now changed, with Ford confirming the Super Duty will be offered in the UK as part of a wider European rollout.

This is not a slightly tougher trim level or a styling package.

Ford says the Ranger Super Duty has been developed for demanding users in sectors such as emergency services, forestry, mining, utilities and defence.

The key figures are well beyond those of a normal one-tonne pick-up. Ford is quoting a payload of close to two tonnes, a towing capacity of up to 4.5 tonnes, and a gross combined mass of up to eight tonnes.

Built for heavier work

To handle those loads, Ford has made substantial changes beneath the surface.

The chassis frame is thicker, the driveshafts and suspension have been reinforced, and the Super Duty gets the strongest rear axle ever fitted to a Ranger. It also moves to an eight-stud wheel hub pattern, with uprated tow bar mounts and extensive underbody protection.

Power comes from Ford’s 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel, retuned for heavy-duty use, with cooling capacity increased by 25%. The fuel tank grows to 130 litres, while ground clearance rises to almost 300mm and wading depth increases to 850mm.

The four-wheel-drive system includes electronically locking front and rear differentials, a two-speed transfer case and an intelligent all-wheel-drive setup that can adjust torque distribution as conditions change.

Designed for specialist conversions

Ford has also developed the Ranger Super Duty with converters in mind. Likely uses include emergency response vehicles, off-road fire service conversions, utility vehicles, cherry pickers and other specialist bodies.

To help with this, the cab includes six pre-wired auxiliary switches, while sensors and cameras are packaged to reduce the need for major modifications during conversions.

The Super Duty also introduces useful towing and payload technology, including Onboard Scales and Smart Hitch, which show live payload and trailer weight information through the infotainment screen. Pro Trailer Backup Assist is also available, helping drivers reverse with a trailer using a dashboard-mounted control.

Not a normal pick-up

For most UK buyers, the regular Ranger will remain the sensible choice. The Super Duty is aimed at operators who need capability far beyond a standard pick-up and who are prepared for the compliance requirements that come with it.

Ford has not yet confirmed final UK weights, but with an expected gross vehicle weight of around 4.5 tonnes, the Ranger Super Duty will sit above the normal 3.5-tonne threshold for standard vans and pick-ups.

That means drivers are expected to need a Category C1 licence, which covers vehicles between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes.

For businesses, the implications may go further, with many operators likely to need to consider operator licensing, tachograph rules, driver hours compliance and speed limiter requirements, depending on how the vehicle is used.

That puts the Super Duty firmly into specialist fleet territory rather than the mainstream pick-up market. Think of it as a heavy commercial vehicle built around a Ranger body and cab.

UK pricing and availability

Ford has not yet confirmed UK pricing, and the Ranger Super Duty is not expected to be sold like a normal showroom model.

Instead, sales are likely to be handled through Ford Fleet on a bespoke order basis, reflecting the vehicle’s specialist role and the likelihood that many customers will require conversions or tailored specifications.

For operators in niche sectors, the arrival of a factory-built heavy-duty Ranger could be significant. It offers a properly engineered alternative to modifying standard pick-ups for jobs they were never really designed to do, even with a price tag likely to start at around £60,000 plus VAT.

For everyone else, the regular Ford Ranger will make far more sense.

Thanks alot to Peter for his diligent help. He found cars to my spec, suggested other models and eventually found something that exceeded my expectations. I shopped around but the price he found was the best by far!
