UK’s quietest roads revealed

The UK’s quietest roads have been revealed via new research from Jeep - with the Scottish highlands featuring prominently in the run-down.

Road trips are all well and good, but there’s just one problem with them - other people.

There’s nothing worse than seeing a glorious, twisty stretch of Tarmac in front of you that’s just begging to be gobbled-up, only to find hordes of lumbering caravans ahead to slow you down.

That’s where Jeep’s new analysis could come in handy.

The manufacturer used Department for Transport stats to uncover which roads had the fewest daily users.

Many of the least-frequented roads are, unsurprisingly, on the isolated islands of Scotland, with the B881/B878 route on the Isle of Bute in the No.1 ‘quietest’ spot, seeing just 77 vehicles per day.

But the A836, which runs between Lairg and Thurso in the Scottish highlands, is second in the run-down, and is well worth a visit. Often comprising just a single lane, the road cuts a swathe through loch-side vistas and barren open moorland in what’s surely one of the most picturesque drives in the UK. The road might be part of the famous ‘North Coast 500’ tourist route, but it sees an average of just 88 vehicles per day travelling along its 34-mile length.

Elsewhere, the A4085, which runs between Caernarfon and Porthmadog in Eryri (Snowdonia) is the quietest major road outside of Scotland.

And the A686, which runs north east from Penrith to Haydon Bridge in the North Pennines, is the quietest road on mainland England. It’s also considered to be one of the greatest driving roads in the UK, running through wooded gorges and open fells.

Kris Cholmondeley, Managing Director at Jeep UK, commented: “At Jeep, we’re all for taking the road less travelled. By shining a light on the most traffic-free roads, we hope Jeep owners will be encouraged to explore some of these more remote and beautiful parts of the country and escape the rush of everyday life. With more than 40 million vehicles now on UK roads, most places are more congested than ever, but our research proves it’s still possible to enjoy wonderfully peaceful stretches of road that showcase some of the nation’s most picturesque locations.”

The most affordable Jeep to lease right now is the Avenger (above), which can be had with either a petrol or electric powertrain, and which you can enjoy from £309 per month* with Select Car Leasing.

The ‘Go Anywhere’ Jeep Compass, meanwhile, can be leased from £446 per month* with Select, and gives you the option of a plug-in hybrid powertrain and rugged all-wheel drive.
