Dacia Spring gets 137-mile range

The fully-electric Dacia Spring is poised for a full UK launch - and it’s expected to get a range of up to 137 miles between charges.

In the world of EVs, that’s not an earth-shattering maximum distance before you have to stop and plug in.

But the Spring is built with the urban jungle in mind, and Dacia points out that most commuters who might lease one cover an average of just 23 miles per day, so that range should be more than ample.

And because the Spring is set to be the most affordable EV going when it’s revealed in full in March 2024, you can forgive some of its limitations.

The Spring has been on sale elsewhere in Europe for a few years now, but is coming to Britain for the first time.

While full UK spec and pricing is yet to be divulged, power of 65 hp should come via a 26.8 kWh battery. Because the Spring weighs just 984 kg - even in the top-level Extreme trim - it should prove sprightly enough for most needs.

As with other EVs, regenerative braking puts energy back into the battery and helps you eke out the maximum range possible. The Spring is equipped as standard with a 7 kW AC charger that can take the battery from 20% to 100% on a domestic outlet in less than 11 hours, or in just 4 hours on a 7 kW wall box. Meanwhile a 30 kW DC charger enables fast charging from 20% to 80% in 45 minutes.

You also get fancy V2L (‘vehicle-to-load’) capabilities, which lets you use the Spring as a mobile energy source to power other electrical items.

When it comes to the Spring’s styling, Dacia promises a ‘powerful look’ that comes from a ‘clean, simple, pared-back silhouette, such as that seen on the highly sculpted bonnet’.

You get 15-inch steel wheels with covers, replaceable lower-door side protection, and a perhaps surprisingly plush interior that features a 7-inch display as standard. A larger 10-inch touchscreen, as well as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, is available on models higher up the trim ladder.

You also get a 308-litre boot, which is trumps rivals like the new MINI Cooper Electric, and comes close to the luggage space offered in the Citroen e-C3.

A Dacia spokesperson tells us: “The All-New Spring remains true to its original concept: a widely affordable, fully electric car adapted to the real needs of drivers. Just as it has always been since its launch in 2021, the All-New Spring remains the most affordable full-electric car on the market. As such, Dacia aims to encourage UK motorists to transition to electric driving in a very concrete and effective way.”
