Fresh ‘Neo’ name for updated VW ID.3

  • New Volkswagen ID.3 Neo
  • Successor to the existing ID.3
  • Will sit alongside the incoming ID. Polo and ID. Cross
  • We’ll have to wait until April for full details

The VW ID.3 is being replaced with THIS - the new ID.3 Neo.

Volkswagen’s electric ID.3 hatchback will undergo a full rebrand this year as the German firm prepares to usher-in a wave of new EVs.

The Neo’s full unveiling is due to take place mid-April but, for now, we’ll have to make do with these design sketches that give us a hint at what’s to come.

How is the VW ID.3 Neo different to the outgoing ID.3?

The changes are subtle, but worth pointing out.

While the current ID.3 has a bit of a slab-nosed, sloping face, the new ID.3 Neo has a longer bonnet and more traditional front end that makes it appear more like a hatchback than a crossover.

There are reshaped bumpers with larger vertical air curtains at the edge to improve both styling and airflow, while the rear appears slightly squatter.

All in all, the ID.3 Neo appears, on the face of it, to look a bit more like the VW Golf - which is an important distinction, which we’ll get to below.

Tech levels for all ‘ID’ models will also enjoy a boost.

A VW spokesperson tells us: “Thanks to the latest software generation, the electric compact model comes with a host of new functions. These include, for example, the enhanced Travel Assist with traffic light detection and One Pedal Driving, where the vehicle recuperates until it comes to a standstill. In addition, all new ID. models now have the option of supplying power to external devices – from electric grills to e-bikes – with an output of up to 3.6 kW directly from the high-voltage battery using the Vehicle-to-Load function.”

How is the VW ID.3 Neo different to the incoming ID. Polo?

We already know the ID. Polo will be VW’s affordable, youthful and urban electric hatchback.

It’ll get a range of around 280 miles between charges and a price tag beginning somewhere around £21,000.

Compared to the ID. Polo, the ID.3 Neo will be larger, more Golf-like, have a much bigger range between charges (the existing model can already travel up to 370 miles between charges) and offer a more premium driving experience all around.

VW ID. Cross vs ID. Polo?

The ID. Cross is yet another electric model inbound from Volkswagen.

It’s the fully-electric alter ego of the traditionally-fuelled VW T-Cross, and it’s also essentially an SUV-ified variant of the ID. Polo, with both cars sitting on the same ‘MEB+ platform’.
