Grown-up Skoda Superb even more spacious

This is the new fourth-gen Skoda Superb - and with increases to the interior space and boot capacity, it’s even more practical than it already was.

The updated Superb will be available to lease next year and, as before, it’ll come as either a hatchback-style saloon or an estate.

Skoda says the new model ‘builds on the strengths of its predecessor’ and offers a more ‘sophisticated design, more space and comfort’, as well as ‘state-of-the-art technology’.

Size wise, the boot of the hatchback has increased by 20 litres to 645 litres overall, while the estate’s luggage capacity has risen from 660 litres to 690 litres. That trumps rivals like the Audi A6 or Volkswagen Passat. There’s also up to 11mm more headroom in the rear and front, giving passengers more space to breathe.

While we’ve enjoyed a plug-in hybrid Superb before now, an all-new version has doubled the size of the PHEV’s battery, with a 25.7 kWh unit now providing a range of up to 62 miles using electricity alone.

And the good news for petrolheads is that you can still enjoy the Superb as a proper ‘sleeper’ - ie, a car with decent performance while having an understated exterior - with a 4x4 variant offering power of 265 hp - which is on a par with the high-end Audi A6 ‘45 TFSI quattro’ models.

A mild-hybrid Superb with 150 hp is also being made available for the first time.

Klaus Zellmer, Chairman of the Board of Skoda Auto, says: “The Superb has been the standard-bearer of Skoda’s ICE (internal combustion engine) range for more than 20 years. In its fourth generation it will continue to be just that, offering an even more refined, sculptural design, outstanding spaciousness and cutting-edge technology. Further powertrain optimisations and improved aerodynamics make for even greater efficiency.”

There’s a new front grille and a sleeker stance in general, in order to improve the Superb’s aerodynamics. Those tweaks include a steeply-raked windscreen, a more streamlined roofline, and a new rear spoiler.

All Superbs will come with a DSG automatic gearbox as standard, with the gear lever moved from the centre console to the steering column to create more space in the cabin.

The Superb’s interior gets a new 13-inch, free-standing infotainment display, new ‘Phone Box’ with wireless inductive gadget charging, and USB-C sockets. Heated ‘Ergo’ seats with massage function are also up for grabs.

Three ‘Smart Dials’ located just underneath the infotainment screen are pleasingly grabbable and tactile. They control a number of different functions, from the interior temperature to zooming-in on the map.

Meanwhile Skoda is making a big deal about how sustainable and environmentally-friendly the cabin textiles are, too, as they’re all made from 100 per cent recycled materials. You can choose from a series of ‘Design Selection’ packages that lets you tailor-make the interior according to your own personal tastes.

Besides the new hybrid powertrains, there are two petrol engines with power of either 204 hp or 265 hp. And there are also two diesel units, with power of either 150 hp or 193 hp.

New driver assistance and safety systems include Turn Assist, Crossroad Assist, Emergency Steering Assist, and Exit Warning. A new ‘Intelligent Park Assist’ can automatically park the Superb in end-on and parallel parking spaces - while even controlling the car’s speed.

The range-topping model will be the Superb ‘L&K’ - aka, Vaclav Laurin and Vaclav Klement, Skoda’s founding fathers who began to ply their trade way back in 1895.

These models get an uprated suspension system, LED Matrix headlights, progressive steering, and unique dark chrome flourishes on the exterior. Meanwhile the Superb L&K cabins boast heated, ventilated and massaging seats, a Canton sound system, ambient lighting and a black leather interior.
