Here’s your first proper look at the incoming, retro-tastic Renault 5 E-Tech electric, which is slated for launch next year.
And the headline news is that it’ll come with a 52kWh battery delivering up to 248 miles of driving range.
The original Renault 5 was a compact family hatchback that first launched in the early 1970s before disappearing in the mid-1990s as it made way for the Clio.
If you’re of a certain vintage, chances are you owned or drove one at some point.
Now the Renault 5 - aka ‘R5’ - is being reborn as an ultra-modern electric vehicle, but which still gives a nostalgic nod to the past in the way that it marries old and new to create a new ‘cult icon’.
The brand new Renault 5 will be revealed in full at the Geneva International Motor Show, which begins in February 2024.
But to keep us all on tenterhooks, Renault has released these teaser pics which give us a decent idea about how the R5 EV might look.
This production-ready version doesn’t appear to differ too radically from the prototype (below) we saw way back in 2021.

The headlights resemble the ‘pupil of the human eye’, while there’s also a battery charge indicator light on the bonnet where the air intake used to be on the historic R5.
There are wide wheel arches for some hot hatch-esque road presence, reminiscent of the old Renault 5 Turbo models.
Meanwhile the vertical rear lights have been designed to boost aerodynamic performance.
A Renault spokesperson tells us: “Launched in 1972, at a time of social and societal turmoil, R5 shook up the automotive industry with its revolutionary approach to cars. In 2024, Renault is starting another revolution against a different backdrop: the energy transition, the location of production in France and the need for energy sobriety. And it is out to publicise this imminent comeback with a campaign taking in the whole of Europe.”
The Renault 5 E-Tech will also be the manufacturer’s first production vehicle to feature V2G (vehicle-to-grid) technology - which lets drivers put charge back into the grid and can help them save money on their overall electricity bill.
Fabrice Cambolive, CEO Renault brand, added: “Renault 5 E-Tech electric is a cult icon redesigned for the modern age. We pulled out all the stops for this engaging car, designed and built in France. With its cheerful design and new-generation technologies, it’s out to make electric vehicles more affordable in Europe.”
You’ll be the first to find out when order books open.
In the meantime, you should also take a look at the brilliant Renault Megane E-Tech, another EV recently reborn by the French firm and which gives you a range of up to 280 miles between charges.
