Mitsubishi L200 returns in May as £36k rival to Ranger and Hilux

  • Mitsubishi L200 pick-up readying for UK return
  • Comeback for the brand after 2021 withdrawal
  • Rival to the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux
  • Priced from £36,295, ex VAT

Mitsubishi will return to the UK pick-up market in May with the launch of the new L200, priced from £36,295 excluding VAT.

The seventh-generation L200 marks Mitsubishi’s return to the UK since the brand withdrew from the market in 2021.

With its £36,295 starting price, the new L200 sits above the £30,800 Ford Ranger XL double cab, but undercuts the Toyota Hilux, which currently starts at £40,436. Pricing is broadly comparable with the Isuzu D-Max and slightly higher than the new GWM Poer300.

Commercial variant available

The L200 will be offered in double-cab form as standard, alongside a dedicated Commercial variant priced from £37,495 ex-VAT.

Like a similar conversion offered on the Isuzu D-Max, this version removes the rear seats and replaces them with a secure load area behind the front seats. The setup allows buyers to retain the practicality and off-road capability of a double cab while meeting commercial vehicle tax rules.

Company car drivers will then be able to take advantage of BIK rates for commercial vehicles, rather than cars, as most double-cabs are now classified. This can save a driver as much as £6,000 on their annual tax bill, at the expense of rear seats and the family practicality that comes with that.

Diesel power and serious towing ability

All versions of the L200 will be powered by a twin-turbocharged 2.4-litre diesel engine paired with a six-speed automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive.

While full UK specifications are still to be confirmed, the equivalent Australian model produces 204hp and 470Nm of torque. Mitsubishi is quoting a 3.5-tonne towing capacity and one-tonne payload, putting it firmly in line with key rivals.

Two trim levels will be available at launch: Titan and Barbarian. The Barbarian gains Mitsubishi’s Super Select 4WD-II system, allowing permanent four-wheel drive along with selectable terrain modes for different surfaces and working conditions.

Order books for the new L200 will open shortly ahead of first UK deliveries in May.
