Cheap and Chery: New £19,995 Tiggo 4 arrives

  • New Chery Tiggo 4 revealed
  • Compact crossover with full hybrid powertrain
  • Rival to VW T-Roc and Ford Puma
  • Prices start from £19,995
  • Undercuts a slew of rivals on cost
  • Launches imminently

Chinese manufacturer Chery has launched a new low-cost compact crossover - and it’s sure to set the cat amongst the pigeons.

In case you’re not familiar, Chery is a mega manufacturer responsible for a number of brands, including Omoda and Jaecoo.

It also offers its own-brand Chery cars; the Tiggo 7, Tiggo 8 and Tiggo 9.

Chery is now ushering-in a much more urban-friendly model in the form of the Tiggo 4.

It’s a full-hybrid with decent amounts of power.

With prices beginning at just £19,995, it’s a few thousand quid cheaper than its nearest rivals… and would well spark an affordability war.

Here’s all you need to know:

What is the Chery Tiggo 4?

The Chery Tiggo 4 is a full-hybrid crossover that takes the fight to leasing heavyweights like the VW T-Roc, Ford Puma, Hyundai Kona and Toyota Yaris Cross.

It’s a five seater that measures around 4,300mm long, 1,825 wide, and 1,655 tall, which makes it slightly bigger than a Nissan Juke but not quite as big as a Nissan Qashqai.

It gets Chery’s distinctive diamond front grille, a clean and ‘well planned interior’, Chery tells us, and full specs are due to be revealed soon.

Is the Chery Tiggo 4 a hybrid?

Yes, the Chery Tiggo 4 is a full hybrid. In fact, it’s Chery’s first full hybrid for the UK, with the larger Tiggo 7, Tiggo 8 and Tiggo 9 all offered with a plug-in hybrid powertrain instead.

A 1.5-litre petrol engine combines with a 1.83 kWh battery and automatic DHT transmission to chuck out 204 PS and 310 Nm torque.

That’s decent indeed, with the cheapest versions of the Ford Puma and VW T-Roc making do with power of around 115-125 PS.

Is the Chery Tiggo 4 cheap?

With an asking price that begins at £19,995, on the road, it’s considerably cheaper than a host of rivals.

The VW T-Roc is arguably the most similar in terms of size, yet the T-Roc begins at £31,000 - a cool £11,000 more than the Tiggo 4.

The Ford Puma is the UK’s best-selling car and affordable for most folks, beginning at £26,580.

Yet that’s still several thousands of pounds more expensive than the Tiggo 4 and the Puma is a mild hybrid, not a frugal full hybrid like the Chery is.

Farrell Hsu, Chery UK Country Director, said: “The Chery Tiggo 4 CSH is a model we’ve been very excited to introduce in the UK. Our first full-hybrid reflects what Chery stands for – smart technology, everyday usability and exceptional value. It’s packed with personality and intelligent features, with our unique Chery Super Hybrid technology as standard, giving customers a smarter choice for their next SUV.”

contacted select car leasing after seeing a car I was interested in at a great price. I was put in touch with Darren Harness who answered any questions I had and assisted in going through with the lease agreement. Great portal for updates and progress of lease and delivery etc. No issues at all so would consider in future and also recommend
