KGM launches electric Torres EVX SUV

In the market for an electric SUV and not afraid to stray from the beaten path? You’ll need to check out the new KGM Torres EVX.

In case you missed it, KGM is the new name for respected Korean manufacturer SsangYong following a major rebrand earlier this year.

And this new Torres EVX is a large, rugged, five-seat SUV that acts as the battery-powered sibling to the petrol-engined KGM Torres.

It’s priced from £47,495 to purchase outright (leasing costs to be announced soon) and it’s here to take on heavyweight competitors like the Nissan Ariya, Skoda Enyaq iV and the Volkswagen ID.4.

The Torres EVX is underpinned by a 73.4 kWh battery that drives the front wheels with power of 207 PS.

Crucially, that battery is a well-respected ‘Blade’ unit provided by global EV giants BYD, which is a Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) unit that’s said to offer higher levels of safety compared with a typical higher lithium-ion battery.

You can expect a range of up to 287 miles on a single charge while the Torres EVX also has a 1.5 tonne towing capacity and competitive approach and departure angles for off-road driving.

The Torres EVX is capable of accelerating from 0-62mph in 8.1 seconds and then on to a top speed of 109 mph.

There’s a gargantuan boot - 839 litres with the seats in place, or 1,662 with the rear-most seats folded flat - which is only slightly down on the Skoda Kodiaq. Meanwhile vehicle-to-load (V2L) capabilities - which lets you power outdoor appliances straight from the car's battery - boost the car’s versatility even further.

When it comes to the cabin, you can expect Apple CarPlay, Google Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, DAB radio, front USB and AUX ports, TomTom navigation, and wireless phone charging to be fitted to entry-level ‘K30’ models.

You even get heated and ventilated front seats, heated seats in the back, a heated steering wheel, intelligent adaptive cruise control, and a rear parking camera, all fitted as standard.

The slightly more pricey ‘K40’ Torres EVX adds creature comforts like a 3D 360-degree surround view camera, premium leather seats, and more safety-boosting tech like ‘Rear Cross Traffic Warning’ and blind spot detection.

Kevin Griffin, managing director of KGM UK, said; “Torres EVX is our next SUV in electric vehicle innovation. It builds on our advancements and proud SUV heritage by integrating cutting-edge technology, unparalleled safety features, and exceptional performance, representing a significant leap forward in mobility solutions.”

We’ll be test driving both the electric Torres EVX and the petrol Torres in the coming days - so watch this space for a full review of both.
