GWM aims for the big guns with Cannon pick-up launch

  • GWM set to launch new pick-up
  • Cannon truck set to arrive this autumn
  • Diesel-powered Cannon set to rival Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux
  • Could also see plug-in hybrid model in UK

GWM is returning to the UK pick-up market with a bang, taking aim at established rivals like the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux with its new Cannon truck.

Set to arrive in the UK this autumn, the Cannon will mark GWM’s first UK pick-up since the Steed quietly bowed out nearly a decade ago. But this time, GWM isn’t coming returning with a bargain-basement build; the Cannon is likely to major on value, but it also promises serious towing muscle, generous spec, and real off-road ability.

The Cannon is already on sale in Australia, where it’s outselling the Nissan Navara, and UK models are expected to carry over much of the same design and hardware.

The Aussies get a choice of either a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel with 163hp and 400Nm of torque, paired with an eight-speed auto, or a more potent 2.4-litre unit delivering 184hp and 480Nm, with a nine-speed auto box.

All models boast a 3.5-tonne towing capacity and a payload of around a tonne, putting the Cannon on par with the class leaders for workhorse credentials.

The Cannon is offered in Premium, Lux, and Ultra trims overseas, with an impressive list of features across every model. Even the entry point to the range is fitted with 18-inch alloy wheels, a sports bar and side steps, a rear differential lock, 12.3-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless phone charging, active cruise control, and LED headlights.

Could a plug-in hybrid join the line-up?

Alongside the diesel range, GWM also produces a larger plug-in hybrid version called the Cannon Alpha PHEV, although there’s no confirmation that the model will see a UK launch.

The Alpha PHEV is no half-measure. It combines a 2.0-litre petrol engine with a 37.1kWh battery, producing a hefty 408hp and 750Nm of torque, and offering over 70 miles of electric-only range. It still tows 3.5 tonnes, includes low-range 4WD, locking differentials, and DC fast charging.

When can you get one?

GWM says the Cannon will arrive in the UK in September 2025, with full specifications and UK-specific pricing expected to be confirmed in August.

In Australia, the Cannon undercuts the Hilux and Ranger by around 15%, so a starting price of under £30,000 could be on the cards if GWM maintains the same value-led approach.
