An update is in the pipeline for the brilliant Skoda Superb - and this uber-versatile car is going to be more practical than ever.
The facelifted Superb is seen here in disguised form and will get its proper unveiling in November this year. As before, it can be enjoyed as a hatchback or estate.
Now Skoda has promised ‘comprehensive’ updates in terms of space, comfort and safety.
And the Superb will get MORE of pretty much everything.
There’s more room. The Superb will be longer and taller, which means more space for the driver and passengers. There’s an additional centimetre of headroom in the back, and the front, of both the hatchback and the estate.
There’s more boot - with an extra 30 litres in the estate and 20 more litres in the hatchback.
When it comes to rivals, those are impressive load lugging skills. The Superb Estate will end up with a capacity of 690 litres - which dwarves the 650 litres you get with the Volkswagen Passat estate or the 495 litres you enjoy in the Audi A4. If you regularly lug around a load of kit - or muddy dogs - then that’s an important consideration.
Elsewhere, lease customers who choose the plug-in hybrid Skoda Superb will now get more electric range. The size of the battery being deployed will jump from 12.7 kWh to 25.7 kWh - which boosts the range from around 35 miles to 62 miles. That’s a very decent leap.
Your usual selection of petrol and diesel engines will continue to be available - with power of up to 265 hp - while a new 1.5 litre petrol mild-hybrid option will also be launched.
And no matter which mill you plump for, it’ll come mated to a DSG auto gearbox. Because of that fact, Skoda has now mounted the auto gearshift lever on the steering column, which frees-up extra room in the cabin. Very clever.
There’s more kit as standard in the interior as well as revised looks for the exterior, which includes new lights and ‘revised proportions’. The new infotainment display measures up to 12.9 inches, making it the largest display ever to appear in a Superb.
Meanwhile there are more new driver assistance and safety systems to go at, including a ‘Predictive Cyclist Protection’ feature that’s now a part of the standard issue ‘Front Assist’ package - which also includes automatic emergency braking.
Johannes Neft, Member of the Board for Technical Development, says: “The upcoming Superb has everything it takes to be just as successful as its predecessor. It will be available in two body versions which will both offer more interior space and headroom. Furthermore, it will provide the latest safety features and an extensive range of assistance systems. This highly attractive package is a testament to the great expertise of our Technical Development team, just like the fact that Škoda was tasked with the technical development of both the next-generation Škoda Superb and the upcoming Volkswagen Passat.”
Even before this update, the Skoda Superb makes for a sensational leasing option. You can get behind the wheel of one with Select Car Leasing from £310 per month*.
