Ferrari unveils ‘extreme’ SF90 XX Stradale

Ferrari has revealed a more extreme ‘XX’ version of its SF90 Stradale supercar - and it’s road-legal, too.

The regular SF90 is already a radical vehicle for Ferrari, coming with a unique plug-in hybrid powertrain that adds modern electrification to a raucous 4.0 litre V8 engine.

Now Ferrari has put through the SF90 through its hardcore ‘XX’ division, an arm of the Italian manufacturer normally reserved for balls-to-the-wall, track-only models.

And the result is the SF90 XX Stradale and SF90 XX Spider convertible - and they don’t just up the ante when it comes to styling and performance, they’re honed for the road as well as the race circuit.

Power has increased by 30 PS to 1,030 PS, which means both the Spider and the coupe can accelerate from 0-62 mph in just 2.3 seconds. Top speed maxes out at 199 mph.

And one of the big talking points about these XX models is the fact they get an in-your-face fixed rear spoiler - the first to appear on a road-going Ferrari since the days of the F50 from the mid-1990s.

That spoiler doesn’t just look good, it also creates an extra 530 kg of downforce at 155 mph.

The Spider gets a retractable hardtop that can be deployed or retracted in 14 seconds, and which Ferrari says can be operated at speeds of up to 28 mph. The cabin of the Spider has also been specifically designed to provide ‘occupant’ comfort when it comes to air flow, even when you’re hooning it around the twisties.

The SF90 XX Stradale sounds better than the bog standard Stradale, too, with Ferrari saying the noise that emits from the tailpipes is the ‘ultimate encapsulation of the car’s racing soul’.

A Ferrari spokesperson explains: “To produce an even fuller, richer sound and celebrate the harmonics right across the V8’s rev range, the hot tube system was optimised. This transmits the combustion pulsations into the cabin, highlighting the higher frequencies to reveal the ultimate evolution of the Ferrari V8. The tube from the intake plenum has been redesigned and repositioned closer to the cabin’s bulkhead so that occupants are treated to even edgier, more raucous harmonics as the engine takes in greater quantities of air to deliver the desired torque. The resonator is now nearer the engine to create a richer harmony and increase intensity.”

Just like any other plug-in hybrid, the SF90 XX Stradale can be powered using electricity alone - for a short time, anyway. As you can expect, it’s not as big an electric range as most PHEVs, but you’ll still get 15 miles down the road using the car’s high performance lithium-ion battery. You’ll also hit 84 mph in ‘eDrive’ mode.

Looks wise, besides the ginormous rear wing, the XX gets a front splitter that’s unique compared with the common-or-garden SF90, and which again boosts downforce.

A Ferrari spokesperson adds: “The focus with the SF90 XX Stradale’s development was to produce the most high-performance Ferrari road car ever that also delivered maximum fun behind the wheel, whilst fully retaining all of the functionalities of the SF90 Stradale’s hybrid powertrain.”

Just 799 examples of the SF90 XX Stradale will be built, alongside 599 versions of the XX Spider. Prices will begin at around £660,000.
