Volkswagen Touareg R hot suv makes a comeback!

Good news for performance SUV lovers - the red-hot Volkswagen Touareg R is on the comeback trail.

The Touareg R was always a really interesting model, being a flagship VW range-topper that also happened to be a petrol plug-in hybrid.

The Touareg R disappeared from leasing platforms at the back end of last year.

But Volkswagen has just announced a series of updates for the regular Touareg - and the German firm has revealed that, yes, the potent Touareg R is set to make a glorious return.

As before, a 3.0 litre petrol engine works in conjunction with an electric motor to produce power of 462 PS. The ‘R’ comes as standard with an eight-speed automatic gearbox and 4MOTION permanent all-wheel drive.

VW hasn’t yet revealed how fast the Touareg R might go, but the old model covered 0-62 mph in just 5.1 seconds while still being able to return up to 94 miles to the gallon while having an electric-only range of around 28 miles. That’s definitely a ‘best of all worlds’ scenario.

The regular Touareg is also being given a facelift - with VW saying it’s still the perfect car for ‘on-road, off-road or towing’.

There are new IQ.Light HD LED matrix headlights, an optional ‘Night Vision’ assist system that uses thermal imaging to detect dangers, and new alloys - which begin at 20 inches.

Meanwhile the Touareg is available with four different powertrains, besides the top-of-the-range R, all of them 3.0 litres.

The entry level mill is a 3.0 litre diesel with power of 231 PS, while there’s also a more powerful 286 PS diesel ‘TDI’.

The most affordable petrol model is the TSI ‘eHybrid’ - another plug-in hybrid - that delivers power of 381 PS.

Volkswagen says elevating comfort levels is the name of the game with this facelift.

A spokesperson tells us: “The Touareg is already famous for providing high levels of comfort, and this is only getting better with the latest version. The running gear has been revamped to allow an even greater spread between performance and comfort on all types of terrain, from smooth motorways and undulating lanes to bumpy and hilly tracks.”

When it comes to rivals and alternative lease options, you’re looking at the Porsche Cayenne S with the VW Touareg R, while the standard Touareg goes up against the Audi Q7, BMW X5, and the Range Rover Velar.

You can lease a Volkswagen Touareg SUV with Select Car Leasing from £675 per month*.
