Van and pickup market booming in the UK

November saw growth in the UK van market for the 11th consecutive month, with 27,433 pickups and vans registered with customers throughout the month.

Figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show an increase of 12.7% in registrations compared to the same month in the previous year, while 311,754 vans and pickup trucks have been registered in the 11 months of 2023, compared to 260,315 registrations at the same point in 2022 — an increase of almost 20% for the year to date.

The largest sector for sales is still vans up to 3.5 tonnes, but most growth is seen at the compact end of the market; sales of vans between 2.0 and 2.5 tonnes have increased by 76.6% in 2023, with a whopping 161.1% increase in November.

For the second month in a row, sales of electric vans have fallen slightly, although they are still up 15% for the year compared to 2022 figures. Vauxhall still has a firm hold on the eLCV market, with its Vivaro Electric continuing to top the charts. Combine those sales figures with the figures for Vauxhall’s electric Cargo and Movano models, and the manufacturer clocks up an impressive 28.5% of the eLCV market.

The Ford Transit Custom dominated the monthly sales charts, netting 3,266 registrations, with its bigger brother, the Ford Transit, coming in second with 2,222 registrations. With the Vauxhall Vivaro and the Ford Ranger pickup landing third and fourth, this rounds out the top four for both the month of November and the year-to-date.

There has also been a rise in pickup sales, with numbers up by 30.6% on 2022, at 35,649. That’s still some way short of the pre-pandemic highs seen in 2019, though.

Mike Hawes, Chief Executive, SMMT:
“An eleventh month of growth in Britain’s van sector is hugely positive, especially given fleet renewal is key to decarbonisation. It is crucial that operator demand also translates to zero-emission van uptake, driving down CO2 emissions to meet Britain’s ambitious environmental targets. These are severely threatened by Rules of Origin requirements due in less than four weeks, so it is essential that a pragmatic solution is found, and fast.”
