A closer look at the Suzuki S-Cross

If you’re looking to lease an affordable family hybrid, the Suzuki S-Cross should be high up your leasing wish list. And THIS is why.

Let’s look at the headline stats.

First of all, the S-Cross is a medium-sized SUV-hatchback crossover that you can lease right now with Select Car Leasing from just £181 per month*.

That undercuts a host of rivals, including the Skoda Karoq, Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson, Nissan Qashqai, Mazda CX-5, the new Renault Austral E-Tech Hybrid, and the Ford Puma.

So, what makes the S-Cross stand out from the pack when it comes to do-it-all load luggers?

Suzuki is one of the very few brands in the UK that offers hybrid technology as standard across all of its passenger cars.

And there are two different hybrid systems to go at with an S-Cross lease.

One option is a mild hybrid, which adds 48V electrification to a 1.4 litre petrol engine, and means you’ll get up to 53.2 miles to the gallon.

The other is a self-charging ‘full hybrid’ which mates a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor. Like the mild hybrid, there’s no electric-only range with the full hybrid S-Cross. Here the powertrain electrification simply works to lower CO2 emissions and improve fuel efficiency.

Which Suzuki S-Cross hybrid should you lease?

We might be tempted to go for the cheaper mild hybrid, all things considered.

You actually get more power in the mild hybrid than the full hybrid, at 129 hp compared with 115 hp, and the mild hybrid is also quicker off the mark.

In entry-level ‘Motion’ trim, the mild hybrid S-Cross completes the 0-62 mph sprint in 9.5 seconds, where the comparative full hybrid takes 12.7 seconds to complete the same feat.

That’s quite a big gap, and it’s a difference you might feel when trying to keep up with traffic on your daily commute.

The S-Cross’s competitors can also be leased as mild hybrids or full hybrids.

The E-Power Nissan Qashqai is a particularly brilliant full hybrid. It’s self charging, like the S-Cross, and here a 1.5 litre petrol engine is used like a generator, feeding power to the 145 kW electric motor, which in turns then drives the wheels.

That gives you the feel of driving an fully electric vehicle, as well as fuel economy of up to 53 miles to the gallon.

In terms of practicality, the S-Cross also stacks up well.

It gets a 430-litre boot, which is on a par with the 456 litres you get with the Ford Puma and falls shy of the Skoda Karoq’s 521 litres of luggage space.

The Qashqai, meanwhile, has a boot measuring 504 litres and the most affordable Kia Sportage betters that with up to 571 litres of room in the trunk.

Another one of the S-Cross’s party pieces is that both the mild hybrid and the full hybrid are available with an ‘ALLGRIP’, four-mode, four-wheel drive system.

Suzuki says the system means you can ‘take on any road - even the tough stuff’, and it could come in very handy during the muddy summer festival season, or even just for camping trips when you’re at the mercy of the Great British weather.

The other thing you need to know about the Suzuki S-Cross is that even the most affordable models are generously equipped as standard.

With the base ‘Motion’ trim you can expect 17 inch alloys, heated seats in the front, parking sensors front and rear, a rear parking camera, a 7-inch infotainment display, dual zone air conditioning, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration.

And what’s really unusual for a car as affordable as the Suzuki S-Cross is that you also get a host of driver assistance and safety software fitted as standard, including adaptive cruise, lane departure prevention, and a lane departure warning system.

The adaptive cruise control, in particular, could be a big tick in the ‘plus’ box for a lot of lease customers.

All in all, a Suzuki S-Cross lease is a bit of a winner - get one while they’re hot!
