New seven-seat Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV launches

All-electric power, supreme levels of luxury and seats for up to seven people - say hello to the new Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV.

You might be thinking to yourself, ‘hang on a minute, have we not already got a Merc EQS?’ Yes, we do - there’s the EQS Saloon launched last year and which currently sits at the pinnacle of the German firm’s all-electric offering.

But there’s a new EQS in town - the EQS SUV.

It sits on the same underpinnings as the EQS Saloon but is 20 cm higher, giving it a more commanding view of the road.

And with a state-of-the-art ‘avant-garde, luxurious interior’, power of up to 544 PS, peak torque of 858 Nm, and a range that tops out at 410 miles between charges, the EQS SUV is every inch the rival to vehicles like the Audi e-tron and the BMW iX.

There are three main versions available; the rear-wheel drive EQS 450+, as well as the all-wheel-drive EQS 450 4MATIC and the range-topping EQS 580 4MATIC.

All variants utilise a huge 107.8 kWh capacity battery. Not sure how that converts? We've made a handy guide to reference what kWh and kW really mean.

The 450+ has power of 360 PS and the largest range, while the 450 4MATIC and 580 4MATIC have a slightly lower range of up to 380 miles before you need to stop and plug it in again.

The EQS can support super-fast charging at speeds of up to 200 kW DC, which means the battery can be replenished from 10-80% in just 31 minutes.

If you opt for the seven-seat EQS with the third row of seats, you can expect around 195 litres of luggage space, or 800 litres with the third row folded flat.

Or, with the five-seat EQS, you get between 654 and 880 litres of boot space, depending on whether the electrically-adjustable second row of seats has been slid forwards or backwards.

Elsewhere in the interior, the cabin is dominated by an eye-catching ‘Hyperscreen’ - a large, curved glass screen that spans almost from A-pillar to A-pillar. This Hyperscreen houses three displays that merge seamlessly.

The passenger in the front can even use the Hyperscreen to watch a movie while on the move - and should the driver naughtily glance across, the EQS can detect the eye movement and will instantly shut the content down to avoid distractions!

A Dolby Atmos sound system ‘takes the audio experience in the EQS SUV to a new level’, says Mercedes-Benz, with individual instruments or voices of the studio mix placed around the listening area for maximum immersion.

The EQS SUV should also offer an exceptionally smooth ride, coming as it does with ‘AIRMATIC’ air suspension - and continuously adjustable damping - as standard.

Rear-axle steering with a steering angle of up to 4.5 degrees is also standard spec.

A spokesperson adds:

“In the 4MATIC models, the Torque Shift function ensures intelligent, continuously variable distribution of drive torque between the rear and front electric motors and thus the use of the most efficient eATS (electric drive train) in each case.”

Over-the-air software updates are the order of the day, with tech such as Trailer Manoeuvring Assist or Augmented Reality Navigation able to be activated at a later date.

Britta Seeger, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group, says:

“Be it family, adventurers, tech fans or music lovers: When the EQS SUV is launched in the second half of 2022, it will fulfil the wishes of many customers. The target groups are diverse, but they are united by the active lifestyle. Furthermore, the EQS SUV simply looks good. Therefore, we believe that the EQS SUV will drive luxury and technology for our customers in this important segment. And in doing so, it embodies the pioneering spirit of Mercedes-Benz."

The other all-electric SUVs in the Mercedes-Benz range are the EQA, EQB and the EQC.
