Woah. This is the new BMW Speedtop - a stunning shooting brake that’s going to be produced for discerning collectors only.

If you had to imagine what a traditional BMW ‘Touring’ estate model might look like with only three doors and a sumptuous coupe-like profile, then this is it.

The BMW Speedtop is being described as a ‘concept’ but it’s going to enjoy a production run limited to just 70 models aimed at ‘collectors and connoisseurs’.

It’s expected to cost around £500,000 - a good few more than the £145,450 BMW M8 Coupe upon which the Speedtop is based.

BMW says the Speedtop will be fitted with the ‘most powerful V8’ in the manufacturer’s portfolio’.

That’d be the 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 that you’ll also find in the BMW M8 Competition Coupe and which develops power of 625 hp, 750 Nm of torque, and which can accelerate you from 0-62 mph in around 3.2 seconds.

But it’s the Speedtop’s design, rather than its engine, that grabs the headlines.

There’s a pronounced V-shaped front end with BMW’s shark-nose design as well as slim front lights and an illuminated kidney grille. There’s a two-tone roof, two-tone alloys and two-tone hand-crafted leather upholstery in the cabin.

Despite that estate-like rear, the Speedtop is equipped with just two seats, with the rest of the interior occupied by special niches to stow your made-to-measure bags. The boot is swathed in leather with a light beam dividing it into sections.

Adrian van Hooydonk, Head of BMW Group Design, gushed: “A true BMW exudes dynamism and elegance even when it’s standing still. And that’s also the case with our new concept car. The BMW Concept Speedtop is characterised first of all by its profile. It is very unique in the automotive industry. In this way, we have created an exclamation mark for our entire lineup of vehicles, especially for the Touring models."

The Speedtop isn’t the first bespoke Beemer to be put into a limited production run.

Last year we also saw the ‘Skytop’ (silver car pictured below) - an uber-exclusive roadster that was limited to just 50 examples each costing around £400,000.
