BYD could bring compact electric Dolphin Cargo van to UK

  • BYD Dolphin Cargo revealed
  • Could be destined for UK
  • Rear seats removed to create load space
  • Support's BYD’s growing push into the light commercial vehicle market

BYD may be preparing to expand its commercial vehicle ambitions in the UK with a cargo version of its Dolphin electric hatchback.

The BYD Dolphin Cargo would effectively turn the small EV into a car-derived van, replacing the rear seats with a dedicated load space. While the model has not yet been officially confirmed for the UK, sources suggest it could form part of BYD’s growing push into the light commercial vehicle market.

The Dolphin Cargo would give BYD a presence in the compact van segment alongside models such as the Citroen e-C3 Van and the forthcoming Renault 4 E-Tech van.

The cargo version is expected to retain the same core hardware as the standard Dolphin passenger car.

That includes a 60.4kWh Blade Battery powering a front-mounted electric motor producing 204hp and 310Nm of torque. In the passenger car, this setup delivers a WLTP range of up to 265 miles.

Rapid charging of up to 100kW would allow the battery to recharge from 10% to 80% in around half an hour under ideal conditions.

The strong range would make the Dolphin Cargo well suited to urban deliveries and service work, where efficiency and low running costs are key.

BYD Dolphin Cargo payload and practicality

As with most car-derived small vans, payload is expected to be relatively modest.

Sources suggest the Dolphin Cargo could offer a payload of a little under 400kg, placing it firmly in the light-duty category. That would still be competitive for a vehicle of this size and suitable for parcel delivery, small service businesses and other urban applications.

Part of a wider BYD van strategy

The Dolphin Cargo would sit alongside several other commercial vehicles under development by BYD.

The company has already confirmed the Shark 6 plug-in hybrid pickup, while the e-Vali large electric van is also planned for the European market.

Michelle Titmuss provided an exceptional level of service throughout the entire process. I initially contacted Michelle around a month ago after shortlisting several vehicles. She promptly provided the relevant quotations and presented the information clearly and professionally. As I was undecided about the most suitable model, I subsequently went back and forth with her through both telephone calls and email correspondence. Throughout every interaction, Michelle was consistently courteous, patient, knowledgeable, and highly professional. She demonstrated a genuine understanding of my requirements and made it clear that her priority was helping me make the right decision, rather than simply pushing for a sale. Her approach was reassuring, considered, and exceptionally helpful. Michelle is a credit to the company, and I would not hesitate to recommend her to anyone seeking a professional, informed, and customer-focused service.
