Peace out - it’s a new 70s-inspired Porsche 911

  • New Porsche 911 Spirit 70 revealed
  • Channels the ‘essence of the 1970s and early 1980s’
  • Based on current 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet
  • Convertible limited to 1,500 units
  • Priced from £187,700

Porsche has launched a groovy new 1970s-inspired 911 convertible - arriving with hybrid performance instead of flower power.

The Porsche 911 Spirit 70 is based on the existing 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet and will be strictly limited to just 1,500 units.

It’s priced from £187,700 - a good chunk more than the regular £148,000 Carrera GTS Cabriolet.

Power and performance remains the same, with 541 PS coming via a 3.6-litre boxer engine and Porsche’s clever hybrid system that incorporates two electric motors. The engine is still at the rear, as it was 50 years ago, and all of that oomph drives the rear wheels for a classic driving experience.

Where the Porsche 911 Spirit 70 really differs from the model which underpins it is in the styling, both inside and out.

Porsche has developed a new olive green paint scheme with contrasting grey-gold Sport Classic wheels. The soft top is black, as is the windscreen frame, while three black gloss stripes run across the bonnet.

Referring to the stripes, a Porsche spokesperson tells us: “This detail is reminiscent of the safety stickers from the 1970s: back then, sports drivers applied longitudinal stripes to the bodies of their fast cars so that the sports cars were easier to see in the rear-view mirror at high speeds on the motorway or racetrack.”

Porsche lettering and a round number ‘70’ on the side are also a nod to the manufacturer’s racing heritage while there’s gold-plated lettering at the rear.

The cabin gets a chequered ‘Pasha’ fabric pattern in black/olive neo while the retro-themed instrument cluster still gets a 12.65-inch display and fully digital rev counter.

Michael Mauer, Vice President Style Porsche, said: “The Heritage Design models occupy a special position within our product strategy from a design perspective. The limited-edition sports cars visualise what makes the Porsche brand so special. Every design of our vehicles ties in with our history - these vehicles go one step further. They show how we reinterpret historical design elements in a state-of-the-art sports car.”

I was in the market to replace my existing EV car. Googling found Select Car Leasing. The website proved very informative and decided to give them a call. From the moment of introduction, knew I could respect their advice. Each step of the way professional covered and nothing too much trouble, ultimately finding the right vehicle.
