A spectacular off-road version of the Renault 4 has been revealed.
And while the Renault 4 Savane 4x4 is just a concept for now, it could well preview a full production model. Consider us excited.
The regular Renault 4 is due to arrive later this summer as a fully-electric follow-up to one of the best-selling French cars of all time.

It’ll feature a 52 kWh battery and electric motor driving the front wheels, as well as a range of up to 250 miles between charges.
It also shares the same ‘AmpR Small’ electric platform as the smaller Renault 5.
This Savane 4x4 model concept, however, ups the ante by adding a second motor on the rear axle, thus creating an all wheel-drive adventure vehicle that Renault reckons is perfect for any wannabe explorer.

That ‘Savane’ name is significant, by the way. Back in the day, there were lots of different versions of the Renault 4, including the roofless and doorless ‘Plein Air’, and the Savane was one of them. This new concept brings that badge back.
To boost its all-terrain credentials, the Renault 4 Savane 4x4 boasts a ride height that’s raised by 15mm compared with the bog standard car while it also gains a wider track, special Goodyear UltraGrip Performance tyres, and 18-inch steel wheels.

A Renault spokesperson tells us: “It is agile on muddy, snow-covered and unsurfaced routes, and even on terrain that demands off-roading capabilities. This show car demonstrates the potential of the AmpR Small platform to create a B-segment electric vehicle with four-wheel drive.”
There’s Jade Green paintwork, printed fabric on the roof, and unique Savane logos, while the interior gets retro Deep Brown upholstery and a textile dashboard.

Sandeep Bhambra, Chief Designer Advanced, Ampere & Renault, said: “True to the spirit of exploration of the Renault 4 Savane from the 1960s, the Renault 4 Savane 4x4 Concept show car pushes the adventurous side of the Renault 4 E-Tech electric to the maximum. Its increased ground clearance and widened tracks are combined with a permanently active all-wheel drive system to allow it to tackle the most rugged terrains.”

Here’s hoping Renault actually builds it.
