A study by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles shows that advanced driver assistance tech, such as lane keeping assist, blind spot warning and automatic emergency braking, prevented accidents for 45% of van drivers in the UK during the last year.
The research revealed that the most common incidents involved reversing and parking manoeuvres; 27% of all accidents were parking-related, and a further 18% of bumps were reversing mishaps.
Volkswagen’s research also found that the average cost of van repairs is increasing, hitting £534.25, up from £525.63 the previous year. With 48% of survey respondents saying that business running costs are a significant concern, the rising cost of repairs puts them under more pressure, making even a minor impact a major headache.
Naturally, Volkswagen is on hand to offer a solution to the issue, with a range of driver-assistance systems fitted to its vans - like the fully-electric VW ID. Buzz Cargo - to ensure a safer drive.
With more than a quarter of bangs and scraps related to parking, the manufacturer's Park Assist technology and optional rear-view camera will help to minimise reversing incidents and reduce the risk of accidents in this particular problem area.
Thanks to Brake Assist technology, stopping distances are substantially shorter in emergencies. This technology applies the brakes if needed when traffic is detected, helping drivers avoid accidents.
Alice Axtell, product marketing manager at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles: “With repair costs on the rise, the impact that accidents can have on the day-to-day running of a business is significant. This is why our vehicles are equipped with a range of advanced driver-assistance technology, many as standard, to help drivers avoid incidents that can put their van out of action and help keep business running smoothly.”
