You could be paying over £1,300 per year more for your van leasing insurance because of your chosen trade, according to new research.

According to Go.Compare, which reviewed thousands of comprehensive van insurance policies bought in 2024, the cheapest annual premiums were typically found in local, lower-risk trades such as handyman services, decorating, and gardening. Handymen paid a median premium of £382, with decorators and gardeners close behind at £383 and £394, respectively.

Other trades with below-average premiums included dog groomers (£407), window cleaners (£419), and carpet cleaners (£422). These roles often involve shorter journeys, predictable routes, and fewer high-value tools — all of which help reduce insurers’ risk.

By contrast, courier drivers face some of the steepest insurance costs. The median premium for couriers reached £1,689 — over £1,300 more than the lowest-paying trades. With long hours on the road, tight deadlines and more time spent in traffic, it’s no surprise the profession carries a higher perceived risk.

At a business level, decorating companies recorded the lowest median premiums in 2024 at £356. Building trades also performed well, averaging £426, while cleaning services, carpentry, and pet-related services remained under the £470 mark. Couriers again topped the table, with delivery businesses seeing typical premiums of £1,711 — more than 380% higher than decorators.

The findings underline the importance of keeping insurance details accurate and regularly reviewing your policy. Even small changes, such as reduced mileage or safer overnight parking, can help bring costs down.

“These figures show just how much your trade can influence the cost of your van insurance,” said Tom Banks, motoring expert at Go.Compare. “No matter what you do, comparing quotes regularly is the best way to keep your costs down. Even small changes to your policy details (like your mileage or where you keep your van) can have a big impact on what you pay, so make sure those details are accurate.”

It was my first time leasing a car. Rubin was very helpful in explaining everything and made it essentially very easy. He was also very responsive and replied to my emails within minutes during the day. The rest of the team was also very helpful with regards to managing the order on the Select Car website. Great experience and service overall.
