Top 3 shortlist revealed for World Car of the Year 2026

  • Top 3 shortlist for World Car of the Year 2026
  • BMW iX3, Nissan Leaf and Hyundai Palisade
  • They’ll compete to be crowned champion
  • Winner to be announced next month

The BMW iX3, Nissan Leaf and the Hyundai Palisade have been shortlisted to compete for the World Car of the Year 2026 title.

Two of those cars are fully electric and available to lease right now in the UK.

The Hyundai Palisade, meanwhile, is a large, premium SUV - even bigger than the Hyundai Santa Fe - and while it’s sold in multiple global markets, it’s not available here in Blighty.

The trio of vehicles will now go head-to-head in a battle to be crowned overall World Car of the Year 2026 winner.

It’ll be decided upon by a panel of some 96 international journalists - including our own author, Steve Fowler.

The ultimate victor will be announced at the New York International Auto Show in April.

Mark Schienberg, president of the New York International Auto Show, said, “The announcement of the finalists is an important moment for the global automotive industry as it represents one of the most respected honours in our business. The anticipation surrounding this year’s contenders reflects the innovation, performance, and vision shaping the future of mobility, and we extend our congratulations to the finalists and to the World Car organisation for its continued leadership.”

Why should you lease the BMW iX3?

If you’re in the market for a cutting edge EV with a gargantuan range between charges, look no further.

The rejuvenated iX3 can travel up to 500 miles between trips to the plug and also boasts ultra-rapid charging at 400 kW DC, aided by 800-volt electric architecture.

You can add up to 231 miles of range in just ten minutes, while charging from 10 to 80 per cent takes just 21 minutes.

The iX3 is also the first vehicle to wear BMW’s fresh ‘Neue Klasse’ design language, with its vertically-arranged kidney grille and sleek coupe silhouette.

Why should you lease the Nissan Leaf?

The all-new Nissan Leaf has been impressing ever since its launch last year.

It’s affordable, with leasing prices currently beginning at less than £300 per month*, perfect for families, super comfortable and packed with tech.

You also get a whopping range of up to 375 miles on a single charge.

Select Car Leasing also predicted that the Nissan Leaf would scoop gongs.

When our writer Maxine Ashford recently reviewed it, she said: “

“The car is beautifully styled with a far more dynamic edge than previously seen. It is packed with upmarket technology and delivers on the performance and comfort fronts too. Factor in the impressive range and this could be a car that scoops a multitude of awards moving forward.”

*Prices include VAT. Credit is Subject to Status, Ts and Cs and Arrangement Fees apply. Excess mileage may apply. Stock levels and prices correct as of 03/03/26.
