Volkswagen has released a new ‘Black Edition’ trim for the Golf hatchback - and there are a few key reasons why you’d want one.
The Golf is, of course, one of the go-to cars for families, being both sporty enough to put a smile on your face, and big enough to ferry the sprogs to football training.
This new Black Edition variant sits at the top of the ‘regular’ Golf models - ahead of the ‘R-Line’ trim but just before the more performance-oriented Golfs, like the plug-in hybrid GTE and diesel GTD.
Above and beyond the R-Line Golf, you get exclusive 18-inch black Bergamo alloy wheels, a rear-view camera, and the ‘Black Style’ pack for the exterior.
That Black pack brings rear tinted glass, body-coloured bumpers, an illuminated strip between the headlights, recessed and illuminated door handles, black exterior mirror housings, and VW’s ‘LED Plus’ headlights.
In the cabin, you get sports seats and 30-colour ambient lighting.
And the Golf Black Edition is also available with a choice of three different engines. A traditional 1.5 litre petrol TSI offers power of 150 PS and is bolted to a six-speed manual gearbox.
There’s a mild-hybrid 1.5 litre eTSI, also with 150 PS, and which gets a desirable seven-speed automatic direct-shift gearbox (DSG).
Meanwhile VW has another treat up its sleeve, reserving a special powertrain solely for this Golf Black Edition. It’s a larger 2.0 litre petrol with increased power of 190 PS, and which also gets a DSG gearbox and VW’s ‘4MOTION’ all-wheel drive system.
