Electric Polestar 3 SUV revealed in full

Here it is - the new all-electric Polestar 3 SUV revealed in all its glory.

Polestar has been teasing the 3 for a good few months now, the most recent glimpse coming back in June.

But Polestar - a venture by Sweden’s Volvo and China’s Geely - has now unveiled the 3 in full.

And with power of up to 517 hp and a range of up to 379 miles between charges, there’s plenty to get excited about.

With its sleek, futuristic looks and minimalist design, you might expect the Polestar 3 to be an instant rival to the Tesla Model Y SUV. Yet that’s not really the case.

The Polestar 3 has a hefty price tag of £79,900 at launch, a good chunk more than the £51,000 Model Y, which lifts the 3 into the same luxurious, prestige market as the BMW iX and the Audi e-tron 55 quattro.

The Polestar 3 gets a large 111 kWh battery that translates to power of 489 hp and 840 Nm of torque as standard, thanks to a dual-motor set-up as standard.

If you opt for the Performance Pack, the power gets boosted to 517 hp and torque increases to 910 Nm.

As standard, the Polestar 3 can accelerate from 0-62mph in 5 seconds flat, or 4.7 seconds with the Performance Pack added.

But perhaps the Polestar 3’s most revealing stat is its range figure. That 379 mile distance between recharges is class-leading, proving almost identical to the BMW iX and trumping the likes of the Tesla Model X and the Skoda Enyaq iV.

With 484 litres of luggage space, the Polestar 3 is plenty practical. And with 250 kW DC rapid-charging capabilities, replenishing the battery should be simple, too.

Another big selling point for the Polestar 3 is the cutting-edge tech that’s on board.

There are radar sensors in the cabin that can detect sub-millimetre movements in the interior, to help protect against accidentally leaving children or pets inside. The system is also linked to the climate control system to avoid heat stroke or hypothermia.

Cameras also track the driver’s face to make sure they’re paying attention to the road ahead, otherwise the Polestar 3 can step in to intervene.

As standard, there are also five external cameras and twelve external ultrasonic sensors to support numerous advanced safety features, including Polestar’s ‘Pilot Assist’, which keeps you centred in your lane while also maintaining a safe distance to the car in front.

You can expect a full-length panoramic glass roof and air suspension as standard, as well as retractable door handles with proximity sensing, and 21-inch alloy wheels.

A Bowers & Wilkins sound system with Dolby Atmos capability, a head-up display, and over-the-air software updates are par for the course.

The Polestar 3 should also offer a highly-engaging drive.

Joakim Rydholm, Polestar’s chief chassis engineer, reveals:

“Our goal was to offer the performance and precision that define all Polestar cars, without compromising the comfort of the daily drive. To do this, we used new components like the adaptive air suspension to engineer the ‘Polestar feeling’ for this type of car.”

The Polestar 3 is also equipped for ‘bidirectional charging’ - if you’re not au fait with that science, read our explainer here

Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO, adds:

“Polestar 3 is a powerful electric SUV that appeals to the senses with a distinct, Scandinavian design and excellent driving dynamics. It takes our manufacturing footprint to the next level, bringing Polestar production to the United States. We are proud and excited to expand our portfolio as we continue our rapid growth.”
