First Ineos Grenadier Quartermaster pickup rolls off production line

The first Ineos Grenadier Quartermaster pickup truck has come off the production line at the firm’s production plant in Hambach, France.

European buyers will start to see the first deliveries of the Quartermaster this month, with the rest of the world following suit in early 2024.

Developed alongside the Grenadier SUV, and built on the same production line, the Quartermaster is a five-seat double cab pickup truck, which the company promises will provide “uncompromising off-road capability and dependability”, as well as greater load-carrying and versatility.

The Grenadier SUV and the Quartermaster pickup share not only a production line, but also the workings under the skin — the box-section ladder frame chassis, solid beam axles, and two-speed transfer case are common to both. Under the bonnet, the same BMW 3.0-litre turbo-charged inline six-cylinder petrol or diesel engines provide the power, with four-wheel drive and an eight-speed auto box common across all models.

Ineos has extended the chassis of the Quartermaster, adding 305mm to it, so the cargo box of the pickup comes in at a length of 1,564mm, with a width of 1,619mm. The dimensions are enough to comfortably house a Euro pallet and make it comparable to a Ford Ranger’s load bay.

While the Quartermaster has the same towing capacity as the Station Wagon, at 3.5 tonnes, the payload of the pickup is limited to 835kg for the petrol-powered version and 760kg for diesel models. This could have a knock-on effect for business users who won’t be automatically eligible to reclaim the VAT element, as the HMRC doesn’t see the Quartermaster as a dual-purpose vehicle.

Pricing for the Quartermaster pickup starts at £66,215, including VAT, with the higher-spec Fieldmaster and Trailmaster models seeing that rise to £73,715.

Lynn Calder, CEO of INEOS Automotive:
“The start of production for our second model line is another extremely exciting and important milestone for Ineos Automotive. As part of the final sign-off process I drove a late prototype in both Spain and the African bush and it’s unbeatable off-road, combining the rugged capability and refined performance of the Station Wagon with the enormous load bay that can carry a huge amount of kit and cargo. It’s a great addition to our model line-up.”

Next year, production will begin on a chassis cab model, which will share the same frame as the Quartermaster pickup. This model will be aimed specifically at commercial bodybuilders and conversion specialists.
