The Seal 6 DM-i Touring represents BYD’s first estate car to be launched in Europe - and it offers an affordable leasing alternative to much pricier rivals from the likes of Audi and BMW.
A 500-litre boot is close in capacity to the Skoda Superb Estate plug-in hybrid - with the Skoda renowned for being one of the most practical family cars available.
The Seal 6’s boot expands to 1,535 litres with the rear seats folded flat while there’s excellent legroom and headroom in the rear, too.
Meanwhile the BYD Seal 6 DM-i Touring’s frugal powertrain delivers fuel economy in excess of 55 mpg while also offering an extended EV driving range - which lags behind some competitors but should still be ample for most.
The ‘DM-i’ suffix, by the way, stands for ‘Intelligent Dual Mode’ - as the PHEV system combines the refinement and responsiveness of EV driving with the flexibility of a petrol-electric powertrain.
The Seal 6 DM-i sits in BYD’s range alongside the fully-electric BYD Seal and the BYD Seal U DM-i SUV (the latter of which is also a plug-in hybrid).
But the 6 DM-i Touring is the first model in the Seal family to get an estate body shape and it’s the one you’ll want to lease if boot space - all 1,535 litres of it with the rear seats folded flat - is at the top of your wish list.
Both the BYD Seal EV and the Seal U-DM-i SUV offer more power and pace than this BYD Seal 6 DM-i Touring, so if you want performance you might want to look at those models.
Instead the Seal 6 DM-i Touring is built for covering long distances with efficiency and comfort in mind, and all variants come well-equipped as standard.
The entry-level Boost grade comes fully loaded with 17-inch alloys, vegan leather upholstery, a 12.8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, four USB ports, power adjustable front seats, rear parking sensors, reversing camera, and a suite of driver assistance tech including Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Braking.
The Comfort trim adds larger 18-inch alloys, a bigger 15.6-inch touchscreen, a faster 6.6 kWh on-board charger, rear privacy glass, a panoramic roof with sunshade, heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, wireless phone charging, front parking sensors, 360-degree camera, and an uprated sound system.
The mid-level Comfort Lite grade features the same equipment and powertrain as the regular Comfort model, but gets the more compact 12.8-inch touchscreen.

The Seal 6 DM-i Touring is a plug-hybrid estate - a so-called ‘Super Hybrid’, according to BYD, with its ‘Intelligent Dual Mode’ powertrain offering the best of all worlds when it comes to petrol convenience combined with an EV driving range of up to 62 miles on a single charge.
There are, essentially, three trim levels with the BYD Seal 6 DM-i Touring; Boost, Comfort and Comfort Lite.
The Boost trim features 17-inch alloys, vegan leather upholstery, a 12.8-inch touchscreen with wireless smartphone connection, and a reversing camera.
The Comfort grade adds a larger battery, more power, an extended range in EV mode, and extras such as a larger 15.6-inch touchscreen, a panoramic roof, and heated and ventilated seats.
The in-between Comfort Lite level features the same powertrain and tech as the range-topping Comfort trim, but makes do with the smaller 12.8-inch infotainment screen.
A 1.5-litre petrol engine is mated to a battery and electric motor. Boost models are equipped with a 10 kWh battery while Comfort variants have a larger 19 kWh unit. Power varies between 184 PS and 212 PS, depending on which model you choose, while acceleration is a brisk but not explosive 0-62mph in around 8.5 seconds.
The EV driving range of the BYD Seal 6 DM-i Touring varies according to the model. Entry-level cars with the smaller battery can travel for up to 31 miles in EV mode, while the Seal 6 DM-i with the larger unit can journey up to 62 miles using electricity alone. That’s not as lengthy as the range of cars like the VW Passat or Skoda Superb Estate, but the BYD Seal 6 DM-i Touring sits at a lower price point.
The stated CO2 emissions for the BYD Seal 6 DM-i Touring vary according to the model. Cars with the smaller 10 kWh battery emit 60 g/km of CO2, while the BYD Seal 6 DM-i Touring in ‘Comfort’ trim with the larger 19 kWh battery reduces CO2 emissions to 38 mpg.
Entry-level Boost variants are equipped with a 3.3 kW on-board charger that can replenish the energy in the battery from 15-80% in 3 hours. The range-topping Comfort trim adds a more powerful 6.6 kW on-board charger which reduces that AC charge time down to 2.7 hours. The Comfort grade also introduces rapid DC charging at 26 kW, which supports a 30-80% charge in 23 minutes.
