The BYD Seal 6 DM-i Saloon might have a rather long-winded name, but it’s a compelling lease car that straddles the gap between fully-electric vehicles and those with a petrol engine.
A sibling to the electric BYD Seal, the BYD Seal 6 DM-i Saloon is a plug-in hybrid that offers a range of up to 65 miles using nothing but electricity. That 65-mile figure increases to 87 miles in city use.
A 1.5-litre petrol engine works in conjunction with a battery and electric motor to reduce CO2 emissions to as low as 34 g/km.
The ‘DM-i’ suffix, by the way, stands for ‘Intelligent Dual Mode’ - as the PHEV system combines the refinement and responsiveness of EV driving with the flexibility of a petrol-electric powertrain.
The Seal 6 DM-i Saloon sits in BYD’s range alongside the fully-electric BYD Seal and the plug-in hybrid BYD Seal U DM-i.
The Seal 6 isn’t as powerful as its stablemates, so if you’re looking for outright performance you’ll need to check out those cars instead.
But where the Seal 6 DM-i Saloon succeeds is in balancing modest pace with an extended EV range between charges - up to 65 miles in mixed use.

The entry-level Boost grade comes fully loaded with 17-inch alloys, vegan leather upholstery, a 12.8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, four USB ports, power adjustable front seats, rear parking sensors, reversing camera, and a suite of driver assistance tech including Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Braking.
The Comfort trim adds larger 18-inch alloys, a bigger 15.6-inch touchscreen, a faster 6.6 kWh on-board charger, rear privacy glass, a panoramic roof with sunshade, heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, wireless phone charging, front parking sensors, 360-degree camera, and an uprated sound system.
The Comfort Lite edition of the BYD Seal 6 features the same equipment and powertrain as the Comfort trim but has a more compact 12.8-inch touchscreen display.

All versions of the BYD Seal 6 DM-i Saloon are powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine that works in conjunction with a battery and electric motor - which drive the front wheels. Power ranges between 184 PS to 212 PS, depending on which model you opt for, while performance is modest, with 0-62mph acceleration taking place in a max of 8.5 seconds.
Entry-level Boost variants are equipped with a 3.3 kW on-board charger that can replenish the energy in the battery from 15-80% in 3 hours. The range-topping Comfort trim adds a more powerful 6.6 kW on-board charger which reduces that AC charge time down to 2.7 hours. The Comfort grade also introduces rapid DC charging at 26 kW, which supports a 30-80% charge in 23 minutes.
