Stay honest: Use unedited photos and solid evidence for claims.
Artificial intelligence is opening new doors for creativity, and also opening the doors for insurance fraud.
Experts are warning that anyone caught using AI-generated or edited images to make a fake van insurance claim could face up to ten years in prison.
The warning comes from MoneySuperMarket’s van insurance team, which says realistic-looking fake photos are becoming a real problem thanks to easy-to-use tools like ChatGPT and Google Gemini.
“Making fraudulent claims using AI tools is insurance fraud and is a criminal offence under the Fraud Act 2006,” explains Sara Newell, van insurance expert at MoneySuperMarket. “Offenders who are caught using artificially generated images to make claims could face imprisonment of up to 10 years and a criminal record.”
She adds that even if someone gets away with it initially, they could still be prosecuted years later once the fraud is discovered.
AI image generators can make adding fake dents, scratches, or crash damage to a photo almost effortless — the examples here took just two minutes. With millions of people searching online for these tools each month, insurers are on high alert.

For honest drivers, the advice is simple:
- Take clear, unedited photos of any damage as soon as it’s safe to do so.
- Use your phone’s camera directly — don’t apply filters or even sharpening tools.
- Include wide and close-up shots, number plates, and any interior damage.
- Back up your claim with other evidence if you can, like dashcam footage or witness details.
Even minor edits can raise suspicion, so it’s always best to keep your claim as transparent as possible. AI might be clever, but insurers are getting smarter, too.
