Customer trials have begun for the Vauxhall Vivaro Hydrogen van as the manufacturer prepares for hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles to enter the UK market.
Some of the country’s largest fleets are participating, helping Vauxhall prepare for the launch of the Movano, the largest of its hydrogen-fuelled vans, in 2025.
The Vivaro Hydrogen, already available in left-hand drive markets under the Opel brand, is Vauxhall's first commercially available hydrogen-powered van. It shares its platform with the Vivaro Electric, featuring a 45kW hydrogen fuel cell and a 10.5kWh lithium-ion battery under the front seats. The van offers a range of up to 249 miles, with hydrogen refuelling taking just five minutes — comparable to a traditional diesel model. It also includes a 31-mile electric-only range, with plug-in charging capabilities.
Despite the shift to hydrogen power, the Vivaro retains the same cargo space as the diesel model, with 6.1m³ of capacity and a 1,000kg payload. Hydrogen tanks are mounted under the van’s floor to ensure no compromise on storage.
Trials of the Vivaro Hydrogen in the UK come before the upcoming launch of the larger Movano Hydrogen, which will feature an increased range of up to 311 miles. The Movano’s 110kW (150hp) electric motor generates 410Nm of torque, while the 11kWh battery provides the power for pulling away and acceleration. Efficiency gets a further boost from regenerative braking.

Hydrogen refuelling infrastructure is being developed by Vauxhall in partnership with Ryze Hydrogen, supporting fleet operators as they adopt hydrogen vehicles. The collaboration is also part of broader efforts to facilitate hydrogen vehicle usage across the UK.
