New Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ unveiled

Here it is - the very pinnacle of the Mercedes electric vehicle range - the all new Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ saloon.

The regular Mercedes-Benz EQS was launched earlier this year - and there’s plenty to admire about that car. You get a range of up to 453 miles and a super-fast 200 kW DC on-board charger for those rapid battery top-ups.

With 333 hp on offer, the common-or-garden EQS is perhaps lacking in potency compared with the likes of the Porsche Taycan or Tesla Model S.

But now that Mercedes-AMG, the firm's sporting arm, has got its mitts on the EQS, this 53 4MATIC+ version certainly isn’t lacking in the power department.

It also commands a prestige price tag - starting from £154,995.

A 107.8 kWh battery powers two motors, giving lease customers all-wheel-drive as well as 658 hp and 950 Nm of torque. That equates to a 0-62mph time of just 3.8 seconds and a top speed of 137 mph. If you opt for the 761 hp ‘Performance Package’, the 0-62 mph time comes down to just 3.4 seconds while the top speed increases to 155 mph.

To put that into perspective, it means the EQS 53 4MATIC+ is very nearly as ballistic as the Porsche Taycan Turbo and also comes close to the Audi RS e-tron GT, which has a 0-62mph time of 3.3 seconds.

There are two distinct versions available - Night Edition and Touring.

Standard specification for both model lines includes a ‘Hyperscreen Package’ with augmented reality head-up display, Nappa leather upholstery, a top-end sound system, a 360 degree parking camera, the full AMG driver assistance package, as well as AMG bumpers and sills.

The Night Edition features performance-focussed AMG body styling, with 21 inch AMG alloy wheels, while the interior features a flat-bottomed sports steering wheel, sports pedals and full leather upholstery. If you add in the £9,000 ‘Performance Package’, you get the extra power, as well as ceramic composite brakes, ‘Race Start’ capabilities, and AMG carbon-fibre trim.

The Touring, meanwhile, is the more ‘comfortable, classy’ option.

Here you get 22 inch alloys, ambient lighting, and the option of the £3,000 ‘Rear Luxury’ package, which unlocks electrically adjustable rear seats, luxury head restraints, neck and shoulder heating in the rear, climate control for the rear seats and a wireless charging system for mobile devices in the rear.
