Fast Vauxhall fans take note - there’s a new raft of electrified performance ‘GSe’ models on the way.
The current Vauxhall line-up is distinctly lacking when it comes to vehicles that set the pulses racing.
Sure, the current plug-in hybrid Astra is available with decent power of 180 PS, but by modern standards it’s far from being ‘hot’.
In the recent past we had garish Vauxhall ‘VXR’ models, before that three-letter title was discontinued in 2017, while the last performance ‘GSi’ badge appeared on the now-dropped Insignia.
But things are looking up.
Vauxhall has announced that its GSe sub-brand will offer ‘sports design, sports handling and electrified powertrains’.
There’s no indication yet whether that ‘electrified’ statement means purely electric or a sprinkling of battery only and plug-in hybrid tech, but I guess we’ll see in due course.
A Vauxhall spokesperson tells us:
“GSe will stand for Grand Sport Electric and offer athletic looks that build on Vauxhall’s award-winning ‘Bold & Pure’ design as well as driver-focused chassis set-ups that complement the higher performance of an electrified powertrain whilst retaining the zero-emissions-in-use benefits.”
Vauxhall has already revealed that a 225 PS Plug-in Hybrid Electric variant of the Astra will become available later next year, as will a fully-electric Astra, and you can see the GSe badge coming out for one or both of those two models.
James Taylor, Acting Managing Director, Vauxhall, adds:
“GSe will offer sports handling and looks combined with the performance and responsibility of electrified powertrains.
“Sitting atop the newly simplified Vauxhall range, the GSe name is both a nod to GSi performance models from our heritage as well being a complement to the GS versions in our line-up today. Vauxhall is committed to electrifying Britain and GSe shows that performance and driving pleasure are set to be part of our electric future.”
