Tough Isuzu D-Max Arctic Trucks AT35 pickup will conquer any terrain

Having teased prospective buyers with a pre-production model last year, Isuzu will begin taking orders for the new D-Max Arctic Trucks AT35 from today.

The AT35, built around the Isuzu D-Max V-Cross pickup, has been put into the hands of the experts at Arctic Trucks who have upgraded the vehicle significantly, creating an intimidating aesthetic that’s backed up by impressive off-road capabilities.

D-Max AT35: What's changed?

The most obvious update is the huge wheels. The D-Max AT35 takes its name from the 35-inch tyres that are fitted as standard, while the chassis and bodywork have been re-engineered to accommodate 17-inch alloy wheels and enlarged 315/70 R17 all-terrain tyres.

The suspension system has been overhauled by Arctic Trucks too, with an elevated Bilstein performance suspension system tailored just for D-Max. Front springs & dampers, rear dampers and additional front and rear body lifts provide a total front and rear elevation of +50mm over the standard pickup.

The changes increase the ground clearance to 266mm at the front and 290mm at the rear, with an approach angle of 35°, a departure angle of 29° and a break over angle of 34°, enhancing off-road capability.

The enlarged tyres, combined with performance springs and dampers, resulting in a softer, smoother ride over rough surfaces and a lighter footprint over delicate terrain, all without compromising on-road behaviour.

The rugged performance is matched by an equally rugged appearance, in part created by the extra-wide colour-coded wheel arches, with strengthened Arctic Trucks mudflaps, installed to cope with the larger wheels and extra clearance.

Extended profile side steps not only make it easier for passengers to access the cabin, but also provide extra body protection, while a versatile two-inch rear receiver hitch enables the quick and easy fitment of tow balls, winches, rear-mounted steps and more.

The high specification of the V-Cross model on which the AT35 is based is retained with the black interior headlining, 9.0-inch infotainment system and an eight-speaker sound system. Arctic Trucks branding has been incorporated on the headrests of the black leather interior, joined by Arctic Trucks door entry guards and Arctic Trucks and AT35 badging throughout the cabin.

D-Max AT35: What's not changed?

Despite the rugged nature of the Arctic Trucks AT35 specification, the safety technology of the Isuzu has been retained. The suite of software to help the driver includes automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, traffic sign recognition and lane departure warning, amongst others.

Every step of the build needed to create the D-Max Arctic Trucks AT35 is undertaken by specialised Arctic Trucks technicians and overseen by Isuzu to ensure adherence to all relevant vehicle type approvals.

This ensures that the AT35 still benefits from Isuzu’s five-year or 125,000-mile warranty and, most importantly for many, retains its commercial vehicle status with no compromise to payload or towing capacity.

D-Max AT35: Availability

The cost of upgrading the Isuzu D-Max to Arctic Truck spec is certainly not insignificant, seeing a list price of £47,999 plus VAT, and for the automatic gearbox, you’ll need to add another £1,500 plus VAT.

How that translates into monthly leasing payments hasn't been finalised yet, but strong residual values mean it's likely that the AT35 will represent surprisingly good value. First customer deliveries are expected before the end of the year.

Service was ok but why there is such a delay in delivery when receiving confirmation prior to order that car was in stock and ready for delivery - waited between 5 and 6 weeks for actual delivery.
