Prepare to have your preconceptions challenged - because Smart is going large with its first-ever SUV coupe, in the form of the #3.
Yep, this is the same Smart that for years only ever brought us super-compact city cars, with the recent ForTwo only coming with two seats.
But all that is changing.
The Mercedes-Benz owned brand says the Smart #3 is its first ever ‘sports utility coupe’, which offers more space than the recently-released Smart #1 crossover.
Both the Smart #1 and the #3 are fully electric, with the #1 enjoying a range of around 270 miles between charges and the #3 expected to boast similar stats when its full details are revealed later this year.
Perhaps the most eye-catching thing about the shark-nosed Smart #3 is the interior. I mean, just look at it! Mercedes-Benz knows how to make sumptuous cabins and it looks like Smart does too.
A Smart spokesperson enthuses:
“In the interior, the cockpit reaffirms the model’s sporty energy with circular shapes evocative of turbine intakes, embedding voluminous elements throughout the calm and stylish architecture. The sculpted dashboard flows seamlessly into a high console, housing the central cockpit, a 12.8-inch elevated central screen.”
There’s a panoramic glass roof complete with ‘halo’ lighting as well as an upmarket 13 speaker sound system from Beats.
Dirk Adelmann, CEO smart Europe, said:
“We are proud to finally present our first-ever sports utility coupe, the all-new smart #3 to the world. As an all-electric pioneer smart is committed to uncompromising quality of experience and interactions. Our goal has always been to address the multifaceted and changing needs for mobility. Therefore, smart will keep on expanding its product family to offer a variety of cars that optimally suit different customer groups and lifestyles.”
Fingers crossed we’ll also eventually get a BRABUS variant of the Smart #3, just like we’re getting with the Smart #1.
BRABUS is the performance and tuning partner of Mercedes-Benz, and the BRABUS Smart #1 is packing power of 428 PS, 543 Nm or torque, and a 0-62 mph acceleration time of just 3.9 seconds. That’s quick.
The Smart #3 meanwhile will act as a rival to other EV SUVs like the new Ford Explorer and the Volvo XC40 Recharge Electric.
