New MG HS revealed

Here’s the updated MG HS, which is now sporting a ‘bold new look’ and swankier alloys, according to the brand.

The HS is MG’s flagship SUV, and a vehicle that was the UK’s best-selling motor in January of this year, according to industry data.

The petrol-powered HS is not to be confused with the MG HS Plug-in Hybrid which, as the name suggests, adds an electric motor into the mix.

The big update here for the HS is a completely redesigned front end.

From where we’re standing, MG appears to have turned the HS’ smile upside down, with the front grille going from cheery to grumpy, and looking a whole lot more aggressive in the process.

Here’s the old HS, below, for comparison purposes.

At the rear there’s a fresh bumper design, revised dual exhausts, and LED taillights. There’s also a brand new 18 inch diamond cut wheel design.

The new MG HS will be offered in SE or Trophy specification, both of which will be powered by a 1.5 litre, turbocharged petrol engine delivering power of up to 162 PS.

That’s not earth shattering, but you’ll get to 62 mph from a standing start in less than ten seconds.

MG says the improved HS ‘retains the impressive amount of space and comfort of the previous generation’.

That means you get a decent 463 litre boot - which is more than offered in the Ford Kuga but which isn’t quite as large as rivals like the Nissan Qashqai, Skoda Karoq or Kia Sportage.

A 10.1 inch infotainment screen is standard fit, as are LED headlights, sat nav, a rear parking camera and sensors, leather steering and keyless entry.

The Trophy spec level improves things with additions like ambient lighting, heated front seats and an uprated sound system.

You can also expect MG’s ‘Pilot’ safety system to be fitted as standard on all models. That brings you tech like active emergency braking, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, intelligent speed assist and rear cross traffic alert.

That’s a whole lot of kit for a budget SUV.

Yet despite all of this, MG has decided to freeze the price of the HS. In fact, this model is actually cheaper than its predecessor by a difference of sixty quid.

That price freeze should also be reflected in your monthly lease fee, with the affordable HS available with Select Car Leasing from £289 per month*.

David Allison, Head of Product and Planning at MG Motor UK, said:

“Since launch in 2019, the HS has been a tremendous success with over 36,000 finding homes in the UK. It continues to deliver all the benefits of a high quality, comprehensively equipped, large SUV, while undercutting smaller, more modestly equipped options on the market. We believe the latest HS will be even more attractive to customers, especially as we are able to offer it with no increase in price across the range.”

All went well other than the Tyres were not clean/presentable as you would expect from a new car.
