‘Uncompromising’ new Porsche 911 GT3 RS

If the awesome Porsche 911 GT3 still isn’t gnarly enough for you, you’ll want to take a look at the razor-sharp new 911 GT3 RS.

While the regular GT3 makes do with power of 510 PS, the GT3 RS raises the bar to 525 PS, courtesy of a high-revving 4.0 litre six-cylinder boxer engine.

But the GT3 RS isn’t just about packing a punch, it’s about downforce. It’s why you’ll find an enormous rear wing dominating the back end.

Porsche calls the design ‘uncompromising’ - and they’re not wrong.

While road-legal, the GT3 RS is built to save weight and to boost aerodynamics, gluing it to the track.

There’s one big radiator at the front - not the traditional three - meaning there’s room on either side to add to extra aero elements.

At 124 mph there’s an additional 409 kg of downforce compared with the recent 911 GTS.

There’s a Formula One style ‘drag reduction system’, or ‘DRS’, fitted in a production Porsche for the first time.

It means the wings can be flattened on straight sections to get more speed, and can also be deployed as an airbrake when you need to throw on the anchors.

There are also side blades and fins galore to channel air around the vehicle, as well as large ‘nostrils’ on the front lid.

Even the suspension is built to improve aerodynamics.

A Porsche spokesperson explains:

“Because the wheel arches of the new 911 GT3 RS are subject to powerful airflows, the components of the double-wishbone front axle are designed with teardrop-shaped profiles. These aerodynamically efficient links increase downforce on the front axle by around 40 kg at top speed and are otherwise only used in high-end motorsport applications.”

You get three drive modes - Normal, Sport and Track.

The ‘Track’ setting gives you scope to customise even the minute details of how the GT3 RS rides, from the rebound and compression damping of the front and rear axles to the rear differential.

As for performance, the 911 GT3 RS accelerates from 0-62mph in 3.2 seconds and reaches a top speed of 184 mph in seventh gear. The regular GT3 sprints from 0-62mph in 3.4 seconds.

The cabin comes fitted with black leather, Racetex and a carbon-weave that gives it a ‘purist, sporting ambience’, says Porsche.

The Porsche 911 GT3 RS starts at £178,500 to buy outright. And you can lease a 911 with Select from around £1,000 per month*.
