All-electric Citroen Ami to go on sale this summer

New spec levels and pricing info about the incoming Ami all-electric quadricycle has been revealed by manufacturer Citroen.

The French firm is already warning it expects ‘demand to outstrip supply in 2022’ when it does become available - with a firm date still to be announced.

And with prices starting at just £7,695 on the road, the Ami could well be one of the motoring industry’s feel good hits of the summer - for both customers who buy outright and for those looking to lease.

The Ami isn’t quite a fully-fledged car, but it is an eye-catching ‘urban mobility solution’ that’ll appeal to a heck of a lot of drivers who have to negotiate crowded city centres.

All versions of Ami get a 6kW electric motor, a 5.5 kWh battery (click here for more about what kW and kWh really mean), and a top speed that falls just short of 30mph. A motorway vehicle, the Ami ain’t.

But you instead get a range of around 46 miles between charges. And with a Type 2 connector - the sort compatible with home wallboxes and most public charging points - you’ll get a full battery replenish in around three hours, so make sure you're picking the ideal charger for you.

All Ami models are also left-hand drive, which means you can park up and step out onto the pavement without having to open your door into on-rushing traffic.

We also now know new details about the Ami’s trim levels.

There are, essentially, three trims - entry-level ‘Ami’, followed by ‘Ami Pop’ and ‘Ami Vibe’.

And as well as those variants, you can also add one of three ‘Colour Packs’ - Orange, Blue or Grey.

Standard models get a digital speedo, LED front and rear lights, a panoramic glass sunroof and a USB charging port.

The colour packs, meanwhile, cost an extra £400 and not only add the suitable shade of colour mentioned, you also get special wheel trims and rear pillar decals, colour-coded dashboard storage boxes and bag hook, as well as exterior door capsules, a separation net between the driver and passenger footwells, a smartphone cradle, and the ‘DAT@AMI’ connection box that shows you how much charge is left in the battery, among other things, via an app.

On top of this, the Ami Pop brings unique styling to the face, front, and rear bumpers, as well as a black rear spoiler and orange decals around the door.

Meanwhile the Ami Vibe offers a grey and black finish to the top of the front bumper, front and rear bumper bases, and rear light surrounds, and adds two decorative black roof rails, black wheel arches and ‘Contours’ decals on the doors and front wings.

The Pop is priced at £8,495 while the Vibe is £8,895.

That latter price point is a really interesting one. The Ami Vibe is just £2,900 quid cheaper than a Kia Picanto - a fully fledged car which you can take on the motorway and which also comes with more safety systems than you get with an Ami. Clearly the two vehicles are appealing to two very different demographics, but if affordability is a key driver, remember the Picanto can be leased from around £163 per month.

As well as the regular Ami, there’s also an ‘Ami Cargo’, which has just the one seat but which has 400-litres of storage space instead - perfect for deliveries.

Eurig Druce, Citroën UK’s Managing Director, said:

“These exciting new quadricycles showcase the way the Citroën brand brings innovation, electric mobility and clever design to the widest possible range of people, offering customers a radically different take on urban transport. What’s really exciting is that we are launching Ami in the UK due to huge demand from the public – it’s a perfect example of our ‘Power to the People’ thinking.”
