Your Guide To Motorway Driving

If you spend a fair amount of time each week on the UK’s motorway network, you’ll need a lease car that’s fit for purpose.

We’re talking about a relaxed, comfortable ride quality, a quiet, noise-insulated cabin, plenty of power to sit at motorway speeds for hours on end, and enough creature comforts inside the cabin to keep you cosseted across countless miles.

Fuel economy will also be key, with diesel-powered vehicles typically favoured among those who put in the hard yards, particularly company car drivers.

But with more and more electric vehicles now capable of covering in excess of 350 miles between charges, a battery-powered motorway cruiser is also now a tempting lease option.

Things To Consider If You Regularly Drive on The Motorway

Comfort

Comfort, especially soft, supportive, seats, ample leg and fidget room are utmost priorities when motorway driving. Spaciousness not only for the driver but for passengers as well is key. Cruise control is also a great comfort feature to look for if you're going the extra mile because it reduces driver fatigue.

Reliability

Reliability and a low chance of break-down is obviously something you want as a motorway driver. Some vehicles have extremely good reputations in this regard so seek these out.

Smooth and quiet

Whilst most cars can be very smooth and quiet driving around town, when on the motorway the bumps and noise levels can really ramp up, making it difficult for everyone involved so smoothness (the ability to take on bumps and divots with little impact) and quietness at high speeds are things to look for.

Fuel economy

Despite the undeniable issues diesels face, they're likely to remain as a viable option for those doing a considerable amount of longer distance and motorway driving (as well as for those doing a lot of towing and more rigorous off-road driving).

Motorway Performers

The BMW 5 Series is an accomplished motorway cruiser and an excellent all-round option. Its lavish interior is complemented by a raft of equipment including cruise control, heated leather seats and 'BMW Connected Drive' - which allows you to make calls on the go and pairs up with your smartphone to keep you connected on the road.

If keeping costs down on the road is a priority, the Volvo S90 emerges as one of the stronger options and its CO2 emissions, at just 121g/km, are incredibly respectable. If you're looking for something less executive, but equally friendly on the pocket, the Skoda Superb is a fantastic budget option. The improving mileage range for electric and hybrid cars also makes many of them viable alternatives. The 40kWh Nissan Leaf battery provides a range of 235 miles and can reach 80% of its battery capacity in just 40 minutes of charging.

Safety is also paramount in an environment where vehicles frequently travel at high speed. The Mercedes E Class Saloon was awarded the full 5-stars from expert safety body EuroNCAP and is fitted with autonomous emergency braking, tyre pressure monitor and nine airbags as standard.
