Kia K4 Hatchback (2026) Review
Introduction
The K4 is a really interesting car for Kia, not just because of its design, styling and performance, but also because of its significance. While Kia’s line-up of cars destined for Europe is generally built at Zilina, Slovakia, or in Korea, this is the first model to be built at the company’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Nuevo Leon in Mexico.
So, it would be easy to assume the K4 is a global car, but Kia is quick to point out that each region will have different variants, such as powertrains, body styles and technical set-ups to suit demand.
Here in the UK, the K4 is offered in three generously-equipped trims called Pure, GT-Line and GT-Line S with prices ranging from £26,045 to £36,865.
There is also the choice of three petrol engines. From launch the K4 can be powered by a 1.0-litre T-GDi 113bhp engine with 48V mild hybrid (MHEV) assistance and 200Nm of torque - this is paired to a six-speed manual transmission as standard on the Pure trim, with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox on all other models.
Additionally, for anyone looking for some added power, the GT-Line can be matched to a 1.6-litre T-GDi engine which sees the power output increase to 147bhp.
At the top of the line-up is a high-powered version of the 1.6-litre turbocharged engine, producing 177bhp and the torque also jumping from 250Nm to 265Nm. This unit is offered exclusively on the GT-Line S version and has a seven-speed auto gearbox.
At launch, the K4 is being sold as a five-door hatchback, but Kia has announced that an estate version will follow called the K4 Sportwagon and, additionally a full hybrid variant will join the line-up later this year and that will offer superior fuel efficiency.
We opted for the top-of-the-tree GT-Line S model with the most powerful engine set-up for our test drive, but couldn’t resist a shorter run-out in the base Pure model with a six-speed manual gearbox.

What are the first impressions of the Kia K4 Hatchback?
With fastback-inspired styling cues, the Kia K4 Hatch boasts a strong road presence and is very easy on the eye. Key features include a floating roofline that tapers away at the rear of the car. There are sharp lighting signatures, hidden rear door handles that are flush to the C-pillar, a high-mounted brake light, body-coloured bumpers, along with a choice of 16-, 17- or 18-inch alloy wheels.
The GT-Line and GT-Line S models gain gloss black door mirrors, radiator grille and side sills, and the LED headlights feature small cube-shaped designs. There is additional sport-oriented detailing too, along with rear privacy glass. The GT-Line S model also features a front sunroof.
The K4 arrives with a fresh palette of new colours for customers to choose from, including Sparkling Yellow – a shade that certainly stands out in a crowd.

What are the Kia K4 Hatchback’s key features?
Whether customers opt for entry-level Pure trim or splash out on the top-of-the-range GT-Line S, one thing is guaranteed – they will get a car packed with technology and creature comforts without having to go searching for optional extras.
For example, all K4 cars are supplied with a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen with navigation and a 12.3-inch driver display. There is wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity with voice control, a DAB radio, Bluetooth with music streaming, plus a separate 5.3-inch climate control screen. K4 Pure has black cloth upholstered seats, a two-spoke artificial leather steering wheel, grey headlining, a six-speaker audio and 16-inch alloy wheels.
Move up to K4 GT-Line and you gain all the additional GT-Line exterior styling cues, including the cube-shaped LED lights. There are electrically-adjustable, folding and heated door mirrors with integrated LED indicators, privacy glass, alloy pedals, a wireless mobile phone charger, heated front seats and steering wheel, a powered driver’s seat adjustment with electric lumbar support, a three-spoke artificial leather steering wheel, and GT-Line interior styling which includes black cloth and artificial leather upholstery and black headlining. This car also gets 17-inch alloy wheels.
Finally, the GT-Line S model features a front sunroof with tilt and slide function, black artificial leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, heated outer rear seats, customisable ambient lighting, along with a Digital Key that allows you to use a smartphone or smart watch to lock, unlock and start the vehicle. On this model, the sound system is upgraded to an eight-speaker Harman Kardon set-up and there are 18-inch alloys.

How does the Kia K4 Hatchback perform and handle when put to the test?
Beneath the bonnet of our K4 GT-Line S model was the most powerful engine available, the 1.6-litre 177bhp unit with 265Nm of torque. It could complete the 0-62mph sprint in 8.4 seconds and maxed out 130mph. It’s a car that will sit effortlessly at 70mph on motorways, but will happily deliver the goods when faced with more twisting country lanes. The acceleration through the seven-speed automatic transmission is smooth enough, but there are steering wheel-mounted paddles if you fancy taking full control of the gear switching.
The front-wheel drive K4 is nicely balanced when pushed on through testing bends on country lanes, with impressive grip and minimal sign of any body movement. And there are drive modes that alter the characteristics and dynamics accordingly – they are called Eco, Normal and Sport. No prizes for guessing which is the most fun. The steering is precise and well-weighted, and the car is also agile and easy to manoeuvre in busier town centres.
We did notice a little road noise at higher speeds, but our car was riding on the largest 18-inch wheels so that would be partly to blame. However, the ride was well-cushioned and most unexpected bumps and dips were absorbed by the effective suspension system.
We also found time to take the entry-level K4 Pure with the 1.0-litre engine and a six-speed manual transmission for a spin. This car, with 113bhp and 200Nm of torque, takes 12.2 seconds to reach 62mph from a standing start and tops out 115mph. While it’s not so dynamic as the high-end GT-Line S car and lacks the firepower, it is made all the more appealing by the manual gearbox – a rarity these days. And it is also a lot kinder on the pocket too. The downside - not such a refined driving experience and less on-board tech.

What are the day-to-day running costs with the Kia K4 Hatchback?
The Kia K4 is competitively priced with the entry-model Pure trim with the lower-powered 1.0-litre 113bhp MHEV engine and six-speed manual gearbox, costing £26,045. At the other end of the scale, is the K4 GT-Line S 1.6 177bhp model, as tested, that features a seven-speed automatic transmission and this is priced at £36,865.
Our K4 GT-Line S model with the most powerful engine could deliver a WLTP-tested 42.2mpg on a combined run with carbon emissions of 152g/km.
For anyone purchasing the car after April 2026 when road tax fees increase, that high CO2 figure would result in a first-year charge of £1,410, dropping to the standard £200 fee after 12 months. The cheapest cars to tax are the K4 Pure models or the GT-Line version with the lower-powered engine. These have a first-year charge of £455.

Any business drivers looking at the K4 as a company car will see a Benefit in Kind tax rating that ranges between 31 and 36 per cent, depending on the model.
And there is further good news on the spending front. As all K4 models are priced well below the government’s threshold for the Expensive Car Supplement, there will be no extra costs to factor in there.
Kia enjoys an excellent reputation for reliability and, for added peace of mind, K4 owners benefit from an outstanding seven-year, 100,000-mile warranty package. The GT-Line S vehicle we tested sits in insurance group 27, while the Pure model with the 1.0-litre engine is set as group 16.

What equipment and tech do you get in the cabin of the Kia K4 Hatchback?
The interior of the K4 is typically Kia which means it is high-end with quality fixtures and fittings throughout. There is a powered driver’s seat, upholstered in black artificial leather and the front seats can be both heated or ventilated. The steering wheel, along with the outer rear seats, can also be warmed. There are a few hard, plastic surfaces and some quite cheap finishing to the front cup holders with some sharp edging. But that aside, the interior is most impressive.
The chunky gear lever looks stylish and there is a perfect blend of physical and touchscreen controls. The main focal point is a curved display that houses twin 12.3-inch infotainment screens, separated by a 5.3-inch climate control display.
Connecting a smartphone via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto is effortless and the level of on-board tech is comprehensive with a navigation system, Bluetooth, and a DAB radio with a pitch-perfect eight-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.
The AI personal assistant is powered by ChatGPT and is summoned by saying “Hey Kia” and this can help with a number of tasks such as travel planning with suggestions for stop-off points and also lots more general information. And the K4 is compatible with a raft of subscription-based infotainment streaming packages such as Disney+, Netflix, YouTube and plenty of games.

How practical is the Kia K4 Hatchback and how big is the boot?
There is often a compromise to a dynamically-styled car and that’s practicality. But the Kia design team has somehow managed to strike a balance between the two – the K4 is quite the looker, but also offers a spacious and practical cabin.
The vehicle stretches 4,440mm in length, is 1,850mm wide, 1,435mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2,720mm. Up front it's simple for adults of all shapes and sizes to find a comfortable seating position and, provided the front seats are not pushed too far back, a couple more adults will fit in the back too with ample room beneath the seats for your feet.
The boot is accessed via a manual tailgate and it can hold either 308 litres (1.0-litre MHEV versions) or 438 litres on the 1.6 pure petrol version. If the 60:40 split-folding rear seats are dropped flat, those capacities increase to 1,107 and 1,217 litres respectively. So, if storage space is a priority, it’s worth remembering the powertrain has an impact on the overall capacity.
Additionally, there is a ski hatch so loading and carrying long items is possible in this car and, elsewhere throughout the cabin, you will find a glovebox, deep central cubby, a net in the back of the front passenger seat, front and rear cup holders, a wireless charging pad and door pockets, along with front and rear USB-C ports to keep devices connected in the move.

Is the Kia K4 Hatchback a safe car?
To date, the Kia K4 has not yet been tested for its Euro NCAP safety rating. However, as is the Kia way, cars are fitted with a raft of safety features and driver assistance aids as standard.
All models feature lane keep assist and lane follow assist, rear parking sensors and a reversing camera, cruise control, intelligent speed limit assist, a speed limiter, anti-lock braking with emergency stop signalling, electronic stability control, hill start assist, a seatbelt reminder, rear occupant alert, vehicle stability management, central door locking, Isofix child seat anchors and a full suite of airbags.
The GT-Line car gains a 360-degree surround view camera system, auto dipping door mirrors, highway driving assistant (advanced cruise control that manages speed and safe distance from the vehicle up ahead while staying centred in a lane and adhering to speed limits). This car also gains blind spot collision avoidance and forward collision avoidance assist. The only addition to the K4 GT-Line S is the Smart key with motion sensor.
Can I choose optional extras with the Kia K4 Hatchback?
Kia offers very little in the way of optional extras. Customers simply choose the trim they need and it comes with all the relevant kit and tech as standard. The only real add-on is upgraded paintwork. On our main test car, the basic white shade which is standard, was upgraded to a dazzling Sparkling Yellow colour and that added £620 to the final cost.

What are the main rivals to the Kia K4 Hatchback?
The Kia K4 will be taking on some big hitters in the sector, including the well-established Volkswagen Golf, Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla. There will also be competition from the Skoda Octavia, Mazda 3 and Vauxhall Astra, amongst others.
What’s the final verdict on the Kia K4 Hatchback?
So, Kia launches its new petrol-powered K4 which looks almost identical to the EV4 when the two cars are lined up next to one another. And that’s certainly not a bad thing as both cars boast dynamic, eye-catching styling with plenty of kerb appeal.
It’s a fact that there are faster hatchbacks out there, but it’s worth reminding ourselves about the complete package this Kia offers - it’s stylish, loaded with tech, practical, easy to drive and has an attractive asking price too.
There may be concerns that a vehicle built in Mexico may lack some of the refinement we need and demand here in Europe. But, despite being a global car, the K4 will be modified for each market. That means the suspension and chassis set-up will be designed for our roads.
And with an estate version just around the corner, it will open up the K4 to a whole new market of customers.
