Polestar - the forward-thinking firm jointly-owned by Sweden’s Volvo Car Group and China’s Zhejiang Geely Holding - has been grabbing headlines since its inception in 2017.

The powertrain of the PHEV Polestar 1 sees a supercharged 2.0 litre petrol engine driving the front wheels while twin electric motors give power to the rear.
They combine to generate a hefty 609 hp and a torque of 1000 Nm - which means the Polestar 1 is capable of accelerating from 0-62mph in 4.2 seconds and then on to a top speed of 155 mph.
Crucially, the Polestar 1 - a stablemate of the all-electric Polestar 2 - can travel for 77 miles using electricity alone, meaning it attracts a Benefit in Kind (BIK) tax rate of just 4% for the year 2021-22. It’s also capable of returning an extremely-healthy 470 mpg.
Polestar promises ‘premium as standard’ with every Polestar 1, which means an interior filled with Nappa leather upholstery, a sophisticated Bowers & Wilkins audio system, as well as Pirelli P Zero tyres.
You also get, as standard, Öhlins suspension, a crystal gear level knob, sport pedals, a glass roof, a full graphical head-up display, and lashings of carbon fibre in the cabin.
All in all, the Polestar 1 is a worthy rival to the Porsche Taycan, Tesla Model S, or the Audi e-tron GT.
