About the BYD Sealion 5 DM-i
The BYD Sealion 5 DM-i is a versatile plug-in hybrid SUV that aims to offer the best of all worlds when it comes to affordability, practicality, efficiency.
It’s a smaller sibling to the BYD Seal U DM-i and similar in size to rivals like the Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson.
The BYD Sealion 5 undercuts those competitors on cost and is priced similarly to SUVs with a traditional internal combustion engine.
That, says BYD, means the Sealion 5 is anticipated to become one of the manufacturer’s top-selling models in the UK.
Why lease the BYD Sealion 5?
You should lease the BYD Sealion 5 because it’s powerful, efficient and well equipped as standard, including on the base trim.
The plug-in hybrid powertrain marries a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a battery and electric motor to produce power of 212 PS and the ability to accelerate from 0-62mph in a sprightly 7.7 seconds.
Top spec models (which get a larger battery) can travel up to 53.4 miles using electricity alone and can reduce your CO2 emissions to just 48 g/km.
Standard-issue kit includes 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic LED headlights, rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, and a large 12.8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and 4G connectivity.

BYD Sealion 5 DM-i Frequently Asked Questions
At the time of writing, the BYD Sealion 5 DM-i is priced from just below £30,000 in the UK (base models begin at £29,995. That doesn’t just undercut many traditionally-fuelled SUVs (including the Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson) it’s also considerably cheaper than the plug-in hybrid variants of those rivals, which makes the BYD Sealion 5 such an attractive proposition in the UK lease market.
The electric range of the BYD Sealion 5 differs according to which trim level you choose. The entry level Comfort model has a slightly smaller battery than the range-topping Design grade and can travel up to 38 miles in EV mode. The Design model gets the bigger 18.3 kWh battery and increases the EV range to around 53 miles (though it’s slightly slower to accelerate from 0-62 mph compared with the Comfort trim).
The BYD Sealion 5 develops power of 212 PS, regardless of which trim you choose to lease. That equates to a 0-62mph sprint time of 7.7 seconds for the Comfort trim or 8.1 seconds for the range-topping Design grade. That compares well with rivals, though the PHEV variant of the Kia Sportage is more powerful (while slower to accelerate), and the Kia also offered with all-wheel drive, while the BYD Sealion 5 is front-wheel drive only.
The BYD is a mid-size SUV and aimed squarely at the family car market. As such, it’s designed to be practical for everyday use. There’s generous amounts of room in the rear for passengers while the 463-litre boot is slightly down on some key PHEV rivals, including the MG HS and the cavernous Hyundai Tucson, but should be ample for most customers.
The BYD Sealion 5 compares well to key rivals, including popular SUVs like the Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson and Nissan Qashqai. It undercuts those models on price while being exceedingly well equipped as standard. Its plug-in hybrid powertrain isn’t the most powerful in the class, nor does it have the longest EV range (the MG HS, for example, delivers an electric range of up to 75 miles between charges). But where the BYD Sealion 5 will appeal is with its value for money. It is, quite simply, one of the most affordable plug-in hybrids available in the UK.
