Our video review of the BYD Seal

The sleek Seal is a head-turning electric saloon from Chinese manufacturer BYD - aka ‘Build Your Dreams’. And boy did it turn ours!

And with a range of up to 354 miles between charges as well as stylish looks both inside and out, the BYD Seal is a genuine leasing rival to the Tesla Model 3 and Hyundai Ioniq 6.

Our expert automotive expert and videographer Ric Boullemier sums up: "Who would this car best suit? Anyone who wants a luxury saloon that packs a punch... and for a lot less than you might expect."

About the BYD Seal

The slippery, aerodynamic Seal is the flagship vehicle of the BYD range here in the UK. It sits alongside the plug-in hybrid BYD Seal-U SUV.

A genuine rival to the Tesla Model 3, Hyundai Ioniq 6 and the BMW i4, the BYD Seal blends potent performance with premium build quality and advanced battery tech.

BYD says its Seal is a ‘a true masterpiece of ocean-inspired design’ and boasts a distinctive X-shaped front end and an eye-catching double U-shaped light cluster are the rear.

When you lease a Seal, you also benefit from BYD’s innovative cell-to-body ‘Blade’ battery (it’s shaped long and flat, like a sword) which improves rigidity, space, and safety.

Why lease the BYD Seal?

Every BYD Seal lease is underpinned by a large 82.5 kWh battery that unlocks a range of up to 354 miles between charges (when you choose the base ‘Design’ model).

All variants are rapid, with the entry-level Seal offering power of 312 PS and the ability to accelerate from 0-62 mph in just 5.4 seconds.

All-wheel drive Excellence Seals improves things further, with a generous 530 PS reducing that 0-62 mph sprint time down to 3.8 seconds.

You can expect rapid charging at 150 kW as standard, which can replenish the energy from 30-80% in just 26 minutes,

Which BYD Seal battery and powertrain is right for me?

84 kWh Battery

All versions of the BYD Seal are equipped with an 84 kWh ‘Blade’ battery. EV driving range is 354 miles for the rear-wheel drive Design models, or 323 miles for the range-topping, all-wheel drive Excellence trim. Rapid charging of 150 kW DC can take the energy from 10-80% in 37 mins or from 30-80% in 26 mins. The BYD Seal in Excellence guise is rapid, with 530 PS making it capable of accelerating from 0-62 mph in just 3.8 seconds.

Which BYD Seal saloon trim level should I lease?

Design

Design

The base Design trim is fully-loaded. Lease customers will enjoy 19-inch alloys, a panoramic roof, electric tailgate, privacy glass, leather upholstery, heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated driver seat (passenger seat is also heated), ambient lighting, and BYD’s trademark 15.6-inch electrically-rotatable touchscreen. You also get parking sensors front and rear, a 360 camera, adaptive cruise control, Vehicle-to-Load tech, keyless start and entry, and an efficiency-boosting heat pump.

Excellence

The main selling point of the Excellence grade is the 530 PS all-wheel drive powertrain. You also get a head-up display.

I had a great experience and good customer service from Garry Rahman, from the moment I enquired for a car quotation to delivery. He is professional, respectful and answered all my questions very patiently. There was no pressure to take a decision in haste which I really liked. He explained all my options clearly and made the entire car buying experience smooth and hassle free. I definitely recommend Garry to anyone who is looking to buy a car. Thank you Garry.

This is the third lease company I’ve used, but in terms of the ordering process, the communication, the documentation and the speed of delivery I would have to place Select first for customer service. I also secured a great price (for a Hyundai Tucson) as well as having the flexibility of not needing to pay a deposit, which made the deal very attractive. However, I’m fully aware that you can’t truly judge a car leasing company until the end of the contract when the car is being returned, as that is what genuinely separates one leasing company from another. On that basis, my rating is based on the relationship to date. The delivery of the car itself was one area where I have experienced a superior service from another lease company. The company in question would deliver their cars on a transporter so the cars were delivered to my house in immaculate condition with something like 20 miles on the clock. The car I received a few days ago was driven about 100 miles to my home, on a rainy day in December, so it was handed over to me dirty. A relatively minor point.
