Alfa Romeo Tonale Review
Style trumps function, but the Tonale is competent enough to meet most users' needs.
The Alfa Romeo Tonale is a compact SUV to rival the Audi Q3, BMW X1, Range Rover Evoque and Volvo XC40.
And with trademark Italian flair and a choice of electrified powertrains, the Tonale offers something truly unique in what’s a crowded marketplace.
Read moreYou can consider the Tonale a sort of younger sibling to the larger Alfa Romeo Stelvio, and it shares the same trademark styling, including the distinctive ‘3+3’ front headlights and sleek light clusters at the rear.
Every Tonale available is a hybrid of sorts - either a mild-hybrid or a plug-in hybrid - which means savings for lease customers in terms of fuel economy and CO2 emissions.
The most affordable mild-hybrid boasts power of 160 hp, courtesy of a 1.5 litre petrol engine combined with a 48-volt battery and electric motor.
If plug-in power is what you crave, PHEV variants feature power of 280 hp, thanks to a 1.3 litre petrol engine, which drives the front wheels, as well as a potent electric motor connected to the rear wheels.
The plug-in hybrid Tonale can accelerate from 62mph in just 6.2 seconds, and it’s also equipped with four-wheel drive for an ‘unparalleled level of safety and driving pleasure’, says Alfa Romeo.
What’s more, the plug-in hybrid Tonale is capable of travelling for around 48 miles using electricity alone, in urban use. That’s great news for business lease customers, with the PHEV Tonale falling into the low Benefit in Kind (BIK) company car tax bracket.
A new trim level - Tributo Italiano - was launched for 2024, with these models available exclusively in the three colours of the Italian flag, while exterior stylistic additions include a unique bodykit and an uprated interior with perforated leather seats with red accents.
As of 2024 models, the Veloce trim also features rear tinted windows as standard and red painted brake callipers.
Meanwhile the Tonale also offers an engaging journey every time you start the ignition, with a drive system that’s built to hug the road. Front-wheel-drive mild-hybrid versions have an electronic self-locking differential as standard. The all-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid Tonale also uses sophisticated power-delivery software to ensure you’ll have safe travels whether you’re tackling the school run or a snow and ice-covered mountain pass.
The Tonale is also equipped with the new ‘Alfa Romeo Advanced Driver Assistance Systems’, aka ‘ADAS’, which provides Level 2 autonomous driving. That includes automatic handling, acceleration, braking and remaining within the lane while you’re on the move.
