Toyota has unveiled the all-new, ninth-generation Hilux, arriving in the UK in June 2026, and for the first time, there’s a fully electric version. The Hilux BEV will sit alongside an upgraded 2.8-litre mild-hybrid diesel, giving buyers two distinct powertrains depending on their needs.

Toyota says the approach reflects the reality of the pickup market: electric vans and pickups suit some operators, but many still need the range, towing capacity and infrastructure familiarity of diesel. Hydrogen power is also coming, with a fuel-cell Hilux confirmed for 2028.
New design inside and out
The 2026 Hilux gets a tougher, more modern look inspired by the latest Toyota Land Cruiser. Slim headlights, a new horizontal grille bar, and a smoother front panel for the BEV give the pickup a cleaner, more purposeful stance. All versions now get a built-in rear deck step, and Toyota has simplified the range to a single body style — the single and extended cabs have been dropped, leaving only the familiar double cab — to match demand.

Inside, the Hilux adopts a more contemporary layout, centred on a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a matching touchscreen on higher trims. The dashboard and console are cleaner and more user-friendly, with off-road controls grouped together. Connectivity has also taken a step forward, with optional wireless charging, rear USB ports, and support for the MyToyota app. Fleet managers can monitor up to 10 vehicles for live data, including fuel levels, charging status and journey history.
For the first time, the Hilux uses electric power steering, which should make low-speed manoeuvres easier and reduce steering kick-back on rough ground. The switch in technology also means safety equipment has undergone a significant upgrade, with the latest Toyota Safety Sense systems, plus optional Blind Spot Monitoring, Safe Exit Assist, and a Driver Monitor Camera. Over-the-air software updates will keep everything current.
Hilux BEV: The first electric Toyota pickup
The headline act is the Hilux BEV, powered by a 59.2kWh battery and dual motors for permanent all-wheel drive. Toyota says off-road ability is unchanged, thanks to a reinforced ladder-frame chassis, a protected battery pack, and wading depth matching that of the diesel model.
Power comes from eAxles at the front and rear (205Nm and 269Nm, respectively). The BEV is expected to offer a WLTP range of around 150 miles, with an emphasis on fast-charging performance to minimise fleet downtime. Payload sits at around 715kg, and towing capacity is rated at 1,600kg. Multi-Terrain Select adapts braking and torque for different surfaces, giving BEV drivers capability comparable to a traditional low-range gearbox.

2.8D 48V: Diesel still dominates
Despite the arrival of the electric model, the 2.8-litre 48V mild-hybrid diesel is expected to remain the range’s biggest seller in the UK. The system adds a compact battery, motor-generator and DC-DC converter to improve start-up refinement and help with low-speed acceleration, without affecting the Hilux’s one-tonne payload or 3.5-tonne towing limit.
All components are designed to withstand harsh working conditions, and the hybrid hardware is mounted high to preserve the Hilux’s 700mm wading depth. Multi-Terrain Select and an optional Multi-Terrain Monitor support off-road use, while a Panoramic View Monitor helps with positioning on tight sites.

Hydrogen Hilux coming in 2028
Toyota has also confirmed a hydrogen fuel-cell Hilux, due to go into production in 2028. It builds on the prototype being tested in the UK and sits alongside Toyota’s wider commitment to hydrogen infrastructure.
The new Hilux lands in June 2026, with full UK specs and trim levels confirmed closer to launch. Expect to see a price rise for the diesel model, perhaps to a starting price of around £42,000 plus VAT, while the BEV is likely to begin near £50,000 before VAT and any grants.
